do intl student have to study if applying for nclex rn in cali?

Published

Hi everyone!

I am just so confused.

I already applied for nclex-rn in ny last yr, i chose ny since i still dont have ssn and they allow applications without ssn, now i am scheduled for my nclex test.

my problem is that i live in cali and i already got my ssn, if ever and i hope i will pass this test and apply for reciprocity from ny rn-license to cali, do i still have to study some nursing subjects here in cali for me to be have cali rn license?

thank you in advance to those who will help me. Godbless everyone!

You will have to meet the CA BRN educational requirements whether you are applying for initial licensure or applying for licensure by endorsement from another state.

Pet peeve here: you don't apply for the NCLEX. You apply for a nursing license by examination (as an internationally educated nurse ). NCLEX is but one step in the process.

And yes , if you try to endorse a NY license to CA you need to meet the same educational requirements as those applying for an initial license.

You will have to meet the very same educational requirements as initial applicants. That means your theory and clinical rotations must have been done in the same semester. Specifically, these are the subjects that the BRN in California requires be taught concurrent with a matching clinical component: geriatrics, medical-surgical, mental health/psychiatric nursing, obstetrics, and pediatrics. You can't take obstetrics in the fall and do an obstetrics rotation in the spring. In order for this to meet California's requirements, you would have to take classroom and clinical obstetrics components in the same semester.

thank you everyone for your time! now i am planning to apply for lvn license, that i will be sure enough not to worry about having my cali license without any restrictions, but ill still pursue that rn license.

For your situation, it may be faster to become an LVN in California and then find an LVN->RN "career mobility" program that will result in you graduating with and ADN instead of simply a certificate that says you've met the minimum standards (30-unit option). Otherwise, you will need to have California BRN evaluate your transcripts and determine what deficiencies you have and then you'll have to take formal coursework to "correct" the deficiencies... if such programs exist. Take note that the "career mobility" program will likely only exist in a Community College, while the Universities also must offer a 30-unit option, it won't be enough to offer you a degree, so your RN will be a "30 unit option" license. Get the ADN, then show that you've got a BSN and RN license elsewhere, you may just be looked at as a BSN upon graduation and licensure as a California RN. Choose carefully how you go about becoming a California RN after you become a California LVN. It could make a difference in your career path here.

Good luck!
