I am really upset.
I had been trying to get into this LTC facility since they opened a couple years ago...then as a receptionist (it had been filled)..then a cna (wasn't certified and was about to start nursing school)...and now finally as an LVN.
I dropped my resume/references and filled out an application on a walk in. No posted jobs...but asked that they keep me in mind as I really wanted to work for them.
Got a call...can u come tomorrow to interview. YES!!!!
I felt great about it. This LTC is super close to my house. It's the shift I wanted...the dreaded (to everyone else but me) overnight... and yes, I'm available to work OT should someone call out.
I walk in and know instantly they weren't interested in me in the least.
The DON was rude. Didn't smile one time the entire interview.
Couldn't find my application or resume on her desk. Then says...well do you have your resume?! I told her ..I was told do not bring a duplicate because you didn't like them floating around. I don't know WHO would say such a thing! you should always bring a copy with you! uh ok...so I'm lying to you???
Asked ridiculous nursing based care questions...then when I answered...would say "We were looking for xyz". Ummm xyz is included in my answer as in the overall assessment...I'm sorry I didn't realize you wanted a specific breakdown of my assessment technique.
question 2... same crap.
question 3.... a procedure question ...ok. I know the procedure but I CAN'T know their specific policy on implementing it because...ta da! I don't work there!!!!
I don't know why they bothered wasting my time if it was obvious they had a candidate already chosen. I felt like they were just trying to be able to say...we interviewed 5 candidates for this..to their corporate office.
It was by far the worst interview I've ever been on and while I'm really upset. I wanted that job. I don't want to work for that DON. She was a.... less than pleasant and I figured if she interviews like that then she probably works like that. I'd never know what was expected of me.
I walked out pretty angry. I really wanted that job...but if I were a psychic I'd be living in Vegas...not working at a LTC facility! I just wish they didn't waste my time. Next time I'm going to just politely explain that I can't possibly know what they want if they are asking vague open ended, a million of answers would be appropriate type questions.
It was a waste of my time.
Well all I have to say, these days sometimes it seems that if you get called on an interview, it might surely mean the place is a total mess. That's all that's hiring :)
I remember once driving 45mi one way for an interview finding that as soon as I walked in the door that they filled the position internally. They did interview me for a different position, but the NM spent the entire time telling me how abusive the patients on that floor were, that she herself could never work with those patients/shift, that it would "wear on me", and that she had no preceptors left. Well hmmmm.
I've had 2 interviews where I was told I'd be bored working "there" and why the he!! did I go into nursing - that my previous career sounded TONS better than nursing to them.
Been told when I mentioned continuing my edu, "No, no, you don't need to do that!!!" (why not?) I guess they figure I wouldn't leave if I didn't continue my edu?!
are nursing homes getting flooded with applicants? I applied for 2 positions at one nursing home, I didnt get a interview and the position is still open
Yes. I get at least 5 calls a week from people looking for jobs. I hire new grads IF I have a full or part time opening. I don't hire new grads for per diem positions. Not fair to them to start off their careers without a solid foundation.
OMG lifeofanurse! you made me LAUGH OUT LOUD! WELL written situation!!... I'm so sorry you had to go through that GEEZUS.! your a brand new nurse and have never interviewed as a nurse and she acts like ur supposed to answer like a seasoned nurse!! whats that about... my worst fear is the soon to be nursing interview process and answering nursing questions! I bet she'll call you

I'd disagree about it being a waste of your time.
You learned that you don't want to work there after all, not if that's the kind of supervisors they employ.
You learned a lot about lousy interview technique. (The DON's not yours, just to be clear.)
You got some experience in fielding unexpected interview questions. Next time you'll be a little more at ease when one comes up.
My guess is that they don't have anyone hired or preferred for that position, and that even if they do, the turnover there will be pretty high.
