Interview for 2nd job - told I would hear in a week...but....

I interviewed for a position for a 2nd job a week ago. Was told I would hear something in a few days - I didn't. I took the initiative and called as this position would work very well with my other responsibilities. Spoke to the person I interviewed with, was told the hold up was someone higher up but they are interested and was I still interested etc. I said "yes" and was told I would hear back either yesterday or today. Very friendly. Well...nothing and business is closed for the weekend! I don't know what to do from here..usually it wouldn't be a big deal to wait a little longer BUT I really need this 2nd job and to get going on it and #2, I have an offer from another place I interviewed around the same time I interviewed with that came through yesterday - this other job would not work as well and I have to call Monday with an answer. I thought about waiting until late Monday to call the other place and if not word from the job I was hoping for then go ahead w/job offer from #2.....am hoping I wasn't being told they are interested when they are really not.......................

Seems like this is something I experienced before and just recently. I apply for a few positions.....wait, wait and wait, in the meantime sorting out which best works for me and then WHAMMO they all call at once.!!!!!

I recently thought I had a position because the so called interviewer or whatever she was gave me that impression.....the thing is "DO YOU ASK IF YOU HAVE THE JOB BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE INTERVIEW??? this may sound forward, but in these times I think some HOOTSBAH is necessary. I found myself becoming annoyed with these interviews and WAITING FOR THEM UNTIL THEY ARE READY....hey....they HAVE A JOB, YOU DONT.....and this is of major importance!!!! I know you are waiting for a response for that job that will work...I WOULD CALL THEM AGAIN....and just put it to them straight, am I hired????????? Ok, hope I helped and Good luck to you!!!!

call employer a monday morning for their feedback, saying that you were told to expect to hear from them on friday. might just have been an internal miscommunication, where hr thought the manager was going to call you and the manager thought hr was going to call you. perfectly ok to tell them you have applied for another position with b that is awaiting your answer, and you would prefer to work for a but you need their answer by the end of the day on monday so you know what to tell b as a courtesy. that should get you an answer from somebody at a.

if not, you already know you have a job offer c b. see if you can get away with making them wait until tuesday to notify them. if they are hot to have that answer from you, they''ll call you tuesday morning. if a can't get it together to answer you by then, then b it is. might turn out to be better than you think.

Great answer grntea. I concur!

I am going through the exact same feelings, but two completely different jobs. One is nearing the end of the process, but took a long time. They are keeping the cards close. I saw another interviewee waiting as I left, so I know they are seeing others. The 2nd job I've been taking several online tests, so far all passed with flying colors, now they will send me a formal application (what?) I need to go ten years back. Where I've lived and where I've worked. Then I just found out another interview in the beginning of August, but I fear that is just with HR, not even the divisional folks. I wanted to be able to choose this time. I do know the salary from job #2, but have not any info about the salary or hourly for job #1, they say they will tell me if/when they make me an offer. Things move just way too slow. If I get a decent offer from #1, I'll probably have to take it for fear of ending up with nothing for all my efforts with the two.

Similar thing happened to me only it was two months before I had an official offer and three before I started. I interviewed with A but heard nothing back, talked to manager to say thanks and feel out the waters. Well the waters were rather cold. Few weeks later had an interview with B. B seemed very interested in me and said they would call on such and such a date. A called two weeks later to say they were still going through references but were interested in me and would call either Friday or Monday. A few days later B called, on time, and offered me the job, I accepted and called A right away to let them know I had another job offer and would need an answer, she said yes we are for sure hiring you, I will talk to the unit manager and get back to you with the details before the weeks end. Well, the week ended and still nothing from A. I was rather ****** they nearly cost me other jobs, and began work at B. Two weeks into orientation, A calls. I was like Sirius? I felt taken advantage of, lead on for two months. Then they told me what they pay...I now work there pt. I think it is because it such a large hospital, with three different sites and various satellite units, they hire people every single week, food workers, security, nurses, aides, lab techs, house keepers co-op students, everyone! They have a mass contract singing every Friday. They're were 30+ at mine, and they do it 52 times a year!!! It really made me mad, but I could let my anger get in my way of an amazing opportunity.

If it is a large facility maybe that is why?

After the interview maybe tell them you have another job offer. But this is where you truly want to work. If they are not interested you would appreciate there honesty so you can accept the other offer.
