Interview for MDS position as a new grad...

My background consists of statistics, which includes gathering and analyzing data, developing conclusions and making recommendations based on those conclusions. The ONLY experience I have in nursing is my clinical experience during school. I applied for this position thinking my background may help me. The facility isn't even open yet. But the facility, where I will be interviewing (sister facility), received 5/5 (excellent) from my state--matters to me. It is a non-profit agency.

I'm looking for suggestions for a successful interview; what questions to ask and what questions can I expect to answer?

I also would like to know what red flags to look for?

make sure they'll send you to coursework on mds. it's not something you just sit down at a new desk and do.

Just my personal opinion but very big mistake if they hire you for an MDS position - THAT should be the red flag. You need to have experience on the floor and you need to have an idea of the long term care regs. Your background will someday make you an excellent candidate for this type of position but you have to understand what it is to be a nurse too and without working experience you have no idea.

What Nascar nurse said is very true---the fact that this facility is even considering a new grad for this position is a HUGE red flag. Not only that, in many facilities the MDS nurse sometimes winds up working the floor when there are call-ins, and for a manager with no experience out there, it's like being a toddler trying to cross a freeway: it's confusing and scary, and you're apt to get run over.

I'm sure you'll do very well in a similar job in a couple of years. For now, however, you need to develop your nursing skills and become competent at the bedside, so that when you are called upon to lead, you'll have the background needed to do it effectively. JMHO. :)

I was a new grad in LTC. I've been there a year and a half. Most of us use MDS regularly. I second what others have said. I don't see how a brand new grad with no floor experience, or knowledge of the residents at that facility will succeed. I was required to pass my three month probation period, then take an intense 3 day course on MDS. One month later, I had to take a 2 hour exam and achieve over 80 percent for the certificate. We are required to re-certify yearly. You need at least three months before attempting MDS. It takes 6 months to a year before you're proficient at it.

I think the OP said she applied for the job (which anyone can do). I'd be surprised if the OP got an interview. But, having said that if a private owner without any medical background, and a new facility...

I did get an interview for the position. Now I'm really worried.
