Healthcare assistants/ auxiliary nurses

Here you will find information on the role of healthcare assistant, and also on training, development, and possible secondment opportunities.

Working as a healthcare assistant

Healthcare assistants can work within hospital or community settings under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional. The role can be very varied depending upon the area in which the person is employed.

Working alongside nurses, for example, they may sometimes be known as nursing auxiliaries or auxiliary nurses. Healthcare assistants also work along side qualified midwives in maternity services.

The types of duties include the following:

* washing and dressing

* feeding

* helping people to mobilise

* toileting

* bed making

* generally assisting with patients overall comfort

* monitoring patients conditions by taking temperatures, pulse, respiration's and weight

nhs careers

Roles will vary from hospital to hospital. Where I used to work auxiliary works could not do vital obs unless trained and assessed but if employed as a healthcare worker/assistant (HCA) then they could as they was trained to do that role.

hi silverdragon, about the study and work in uk, is it until now the situation of uk is like that? i'm planning to have a student visa in bison management - majestic college. what do you think? can i ask some advice? your reply would be much appreciated.

although i now live in canada i do know that the unemployment situation in the uk is bad. i have both family and friends struggling to find work and survive. also the uk is making it harder if not from the eu to work in the uk. i do not know what sort of course you are going to be doing but be aware and make sure that your course will be accepted outside the uk.

these are recent up to date figures on how the unemployment is at the moment in the uk

the employment rate and the number of people in employment have fallen. the number of vacancies has fallen. the number of unemployed people, the unemployment rate and the claimant count have all increased. the number of inactive people of working age and the inactivity rate have increased.

the unemployment rate was 7.8 per cent for the three months to june 2009, up 0.7 over the previous quarter and up 2.4 over the year. the number of unemployed people increased by 220,000 over the quarter and by 750,000 over the year, to reach 2.43 million.

this doesn't include people who do not or can not make a claim for unemployment benefit

Just seen that you are doing a NVQ. NVQ in what?

To be honest I feel that an NVQ isn't of benefit as you are already a RN and that is like taking a step back. Do not get me wrong NVQ is good but many healthcare assistants (HCA) get NVQ first and experience to gain them a foothold to do their RN training not the other way round.

Do you have a link or can send me a link so I can read about working in the NHS as a Auxiliary worker? Reason I ask is usually AW are employed by the hospital and paid for by the hospital. You can do agency but more open to be cancelled. Remember Auxiliary workers are not student nurses and you will loose nurse skills which may have an impact on your future

Also be aware as a student you are limited to how many hours you can work on a student visa

-- i don't get what you're trying to say here. Can you please expound?

Working in an NHS hospital is also part of the work placement in the study program. Yes, I'm fully aware that i can only work up to 37.5 hours per week during school days but i can work as much as i can during semestral breaks and holidays.

hi lady, have u been in a NVQ program in UK? social healthcare course.

You will not be working as nurse, but a lower level employee, washing patients, cleaning, doing non professional work that won't be counted as nursing experience. My understanding student status does not allow full time work. You will have to return home when the program is over. Your experience will not be useful in your home country.

If you goal is to make an honest living and send some of the funds home, there is nothing wrong with the program. But is non skilled work with a low rate of pay in a place with high cost of living.

How can you maintain a student visa when working what is classed as full time hours? I am asking for something that I can read regarding what you are stating.

this is on the UK Borders Agency on type of study or work placement

As an adult student, you will be allowed to do a work placement as part of your course of study, as long as the work placement is an assessed part of the course. In most cases, the work placement must be no more than 50% of the length of the course in the United Kingdom. An example is if a course is two years long and the first year of the course involves full-time study, with the last year in a work placement.

The work placement can only be more than 50% of the length of the course if there is a legal (statutory) requirement for the course to contain a specific period of work placement.

If you are enrolled on a higher education course at an overseas higher education institution and you are coming to the United Kingdom to do part of your course, you may also do a work placement as part of your course as long as it is no more than 50% of your study in the United Kingdom.

If you have a visa letter for a course which involves a work placement, your approved education provider will remain responsible for you throughout the work placement.

This is why I'm saying it's a scheme. On the website they kinda promise that student can get a workpermit after their studies and can stay. What is absolute nonsense right now.

I wonder as well about that placement as a healthcare assistant.

LinkRN, I don't know why I have problem PM you. Anyway, contact mo I am going back to UK tomorrow, Monday.

Specializes in General Nursing.

Hi, I'm a fresh graduate of Nursing here in Philippines. I'm still going to take the November NLE, cos I didn't take the June NLE. I filed in the requirements for International Student Advisors (ISA) and I'm registered for the interview on monday for the NHS and the uni where I'll be enrolling. I already paid the downpayment for the interview which is gonna cost me 20,000 pesos. I'm having thoughts of withdrawing my application cos I'm not at ease and I got discourage with what is posted here. I know it's a big risk, really big risk. But I know too, that there will always be risks to take if you want to achieve further. However, I can't risk money much more than what I have to pay which is 540,000 pesos (6,766.47 GBP). I don't want my family to be sending me money instead of me sending them money.

What do u think? should I not take the risk? and withdraw my application?

I'm so confused now. :(

Hope to have replies from you guys.

thanks

does anyone here know the difference between BSC in Health and Social Care offered in Golders Green College and BSc (Hons) International Nursing offered in University of Hertfordshire..?

which of the two courses is accepted in other countries or commonwealth realms?

four of my groupmates, back in my college years (BSN class2008) are in UK now.

two are enrolled in Golders Green, and the others are in UH..

unfortunately, i've lost my contact with them d/t time zone differences and all of them have their part time work since, their CRB or CBR is yet to be release..

any reply will be highly appreciated.

thank you so much in advance.

Nobody can make that decision for you, but when I read that you have to pay getting an interview, OMG I cannot believe that, how degenerating is all this.

I just think it gives you a certain experience for a very high prize, and it's not useful for your nursing career. About making connections what was mentioned before somewhere, I only can say what I observed in England, that Filipinos often stick together but have difficulties getting to know other people, plus with your minimal income and the money you will have to or want to send home, your radius of action is limited too.
