Psychiatric Nurse from UK wants to move to Florida

Hi All

My hubby is 46 and has been a Phyciatric Nurse in a Special (High Security) Hospital for the past 27 years... we are looking to re-locate to Florida and would like some advice regarding qualifications needed .. processes to implement and time scales... I understand from reading this site that Florida (USA) requires a more generalised training .. and qualification. I also understand that any gaps in training in specific areas such as paediatrics and Obstetrics can be filled by (shadow training) or studying in the US ( is this possible in the UK) If my husband was to intend on completing the required training what visa would he need to be in the US ... would he have to be there without the rest of the family or would we be allowed to accompany him? How long is the required training likely to take and to obtain the Florida license.. I hope someone can help with some of my questions and if there are any matters I haven't highlighted please feel free to let me know...

Thanks

hi

to work anywhere in the us you need generic training, was his training totally psychiatric or did he do general training and then psychiatric? if just psychiatric then he will need to make up hours both theory and practical with a recognised school of nursing and unfortunately at the the moment i do not know of any uni course which will cover this here in the uk. if you met all criteria with the state bon and passes nclex then his job will petition for a greencard and he can bring his family with him as they will be processed at the same time, so you will get a greencard also. best bet is to read the sticky on this forum called primer to working in the us.

welcome to the site, good luck and enjoy plenty of reading and posting on here

All clinical and theory hours that are required must be completed in an approved school of nursing. They cannot be done by shadowing or as a volunteer in a facility. The hours actually need to show up on a transcript.

Best suggestion is to go thru the CES process, which Florida requires and see how the hours are credited. Would do that first.
