pinay studying nursing as 2nd degree in us

hello!

i'm a pinay studying towards an rn degree in the us. this is my second degree, having completed a bs degree back home (15++ years ago!!!). anybody in the same boat???

happy to know about this forum!!! thanks to allnurses.com!

I don't have a student visa, but I don't think you need to take CGFNS since you graduated here in the US (i think it's safe to assume that you can speak/understand English), but you will need to take the NCLEX. Plus I read it'll be easier for you (student visas) to apply for employment as a RN. There is a program that the US gov't offers where you need to apply before you graduate nursing school. There won't be a lot of paperwork, either. I wish I could remember what the program is called, but I can't for the life of me. Sorry, I read it a while ago. Goodluck, though!

yup, nclex it is...striking cgfns off the list sure feels good....is it curricular or optional practical training you're referring to, lola? :) i want to do cpt this summer but i worry that i may not have enough opt left (cpt lessens opt time) later while transitioning to an employer-based petition.

thanks.

what's cpt anyway? when do you do it and what does it entail? i'm afraid i'm only familiar with opt. may i suggest you just go ahead with opt instead of cpt? the opt takes about a year and the process of converting from student's visa to immigrant visa takes a long time, from a year to a year and a half.

btw what state are you in? i'm in illinois. :D

curricular practical training. i get confused discussing this matter with the intl center where i study. the advisor says it has absolutely nothing to do with opt. but i read from some thread around here that it does....however, i think i'm safe going by what people in this forum say bec. it comes from experience.

i'm in ct....ano, pa-ginawan tayo??? hehehe.

haha! i dont know about the temperature in CT but right now, we're lucky because it's not that chilly in IL. during the past weeks, it's been averaging to late 30s.:w00t:

btw are you in the nursing program already? are you taking the associate's or the bachelor's?

hi loryces! where i am, the temp spins from 30s (yesterday) to 50s today...it's been insane but they say "real winter" chills kick in next week. :o

i'm not yet in the program but i'm keeping my fingers crossed that i'd see my name on that list this march...going after adn now but i'd love to get that bsn later when my situation is tad over subsistence level. :chuckle

keep warm!

hello nrswnabee,

how are you na? were you able to get into the nursing program? is this an associates degree? or is it a BSN program? Just wondering how things are working out for you...

Take care and keep praying.

hi, glysdi. i've been down with chicken pox and feeling miserable for a week now. your 'kamusta' is timely....drew some sunshine in, thanks!

it's only an adn. results will be out anytime soon and i'm the least worried about it...i choose to. God is faithful despite ME.

and you?? only a few weeks til graduation, huh? God bless you.

Hello everyone! I'm almost in the same situation with you guys. I got married almost 5 yrs. ago and moved here in the U.S. I have a B.S. degree in the Phils. and decided to change career after doing volunteer work and had a baby almost 2 years ago:)

I am kind of nervous and excited to start school again, I guess I just don't know what to expect:( Great thing is I have a very supportive husband.

Anyway, have a great day guys and goodluck!

Btw, I hope to start my pre-requisites this summer. I hope I'll be able to make it to the program. Either way...Life is great:)
