Where are you now? I am in Eastern Ontario and have a full time ICU postion. Which is exactly what I wanted.
However, for some reason unknown to me and many others, I had to enter the hospital as a part time RN, and then apply to the full time postions internally.
I got full time in less than a year. I am sure it is different in the larger centers..like Toronto-Ottawa. It must be....... I hope.
I work in a teaching hospital. I know that when I first graduated a few years ago, I was told by the smaller non-teaching hospital that full time ICU jobs where 5-10 OR MORE YEARS in the waiting..... well, that did not go over well with me. I got the hell out of there..fast.
If I can answer any more of your questions..... let me know.

Hi JMP,
I am in northern Ontario and there are no full time jobs whatsoever in the acute care setting. I was inquiring because I would relocate to other parts of Ontario for full time work. I guess I will just have to keep searching and be patient. Many thanks for your reply. I really appreciate it. Any jobs where you are? Just curious.

I usually see fulltime job postings for nurses in hospital websites. Here are some Toronto hospital websites for you to check.
http://www.sunnybrookandwomens.on.ca/
http://www.stmichaelshospital.com/
http://www.torontorehab.on.ca/
You might also try searching websites of hospitals in Ottawa and London. Good luck!

I know of some who have come into the ICU with a full time position in hand...in other words did not have to take a part time position and then wait for a full time position to open up. I know last summer new grads where hired into the unit, 5 or 6 postions at least. And some got full time postions by last September. Some have stayed part time, their choice and worked full time hours ( more money per hour)
I do not know if there are any full time positions right now. We do have an ongoing shortage due to the fact that so many get the experience and then leave for the states- esp young nurses who are interested in travelling ect...and ICU experience will take you to many places and experiences.
Do you have acute care experience? Have you taken a critical care course? Some have come into the unit without experience or the course and have done well( like I said new grads came last summer and are doing well )..... if you want me to private message you with details of where I am ect... lt me know.
go to

and you will find many jobs listed.
Good luck and happy hunting

Are the jobs as plentiful as in the USA?
If so, where are they? I've checked sites like:
monster.ca
workopolis.com
There didn't seem to be any full time, lots of part time and casual status.
Any new hospitals being built?
Any info. would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
