I'm a soon to be wed Canadian LPN-the only setback is I'm told that I can't become registered in the USA. I love my work and don't want to give it up! Must I choose between love and economics? Any info would be much appreciated! We are a very frustrated couple!

depending what state you are moving to. If you move to NEW YORK you can get your license ,,(it might take up to 2 years)if you move to TEXAS that's a different story ...I am working on it ..

if you like I can give you some help ...

Are you marrying an American? If so, then you should have no problem.

However, if you were applying for your own green card, then the answer would be no.

How long ago did you complete your training? If it was fairly recent then you should have no problem with any of the states. If it was quite a while ago, then your training may only be recognized by certain states.

Hi guys,

I couldnt help but jump in. I too am a Canadian RPN/LPN (graduated last fall) and looking to get into the US. I am married to an US citizen and we have started immigration stuff me to get down there on a spousal visa, but I am also trying to get all my nursing stuff in order to be able to work when we are approved a visa.

I too, am discovering that Im hearing different stories from different people about whether or not we can work down there as lpn's. Do any of you know where we can find out more information about getting US licenses? Or do you know how being married will help me get a US license?

I know that its possible for me to obtain a work permit and SSN before looking for work...its getting the license that Im worried about.

All the best,

Vida

Since you are married to an American, you should have no problem. You need to check directly with the Board of Nursing of the state that you wish to get licensed in as they each have their own rules.

Most Canadian LPNs have difficulties with getting permission to work, as LPNs are not covered under the NAFTA agreement.

Best of luck to you............

Thanks so much!

Depending what state you are moving to ,RPN's from Canada are not recognized in the states ..you will have to go through this long outdrwan process ..I will give you all the information and where to start ..it took me almost 3 years to get my license in Texas ...

Now if you move to New York its a little easier ...

So if you need my help let me know...and being married to a Us citizen does NOT help any.....

Being married to an American gives you a shortcut in being able to work legally in the US. That is where most of the problems occur.

I went through it and believe me it does not matter being married to an american citizen ..maybe to get a work permit but not in matter of getting a license in the states being a RPN from CANADA ..I went through the process and finnally got a license here in TEXAS ..

:Melody:believe me it takes patience and you have to know many backdoors to enter and circumvent the system ..its not fair but it can be done...:uhoh3:

This is an old thread but to work in the US you need RN and I am sure that it is the same if coming from Canada. You also need VSC which can be obtained from CGFNS website. If you meet requirements then you apply for TN as long as you have an employer.

Look for post 28 in this thread https://allnurses.com/forums/f108/working-u-s-107401-3.html

I know this is an old thread, GINGER if you are still a part of this forum, will you please help me with some questions I have about getting licensed in Texas ( Canadian RPN). Thanks!
