Injured Nurses

Published

Are there any nurses out there who have sustained back injury? Would you like to share your story? Thanks.

I just had one back in March. My tech and I were pulling a pt out of a minivan on a backboard onto a gurney and the son decided to "help". He hoed when we were still on the heave and pulled me off balance. It's not the first back injury I've had but I've never needed prolonged treatment or surgery, thank God.

I am in pain on a daily basis. I first noticed the pain in March 2005 when I experienced a 'claudication' cramping in my right calf. My right foot would become numb and walking would become a painful feat to accomplish. I would have to sit or squat in order to get some relief.

Fast forward to 14 months later. I still suffer from horrible calf pain but discovered it is due to a lower back problem with my lumbar spine (between L4 and L5). The nerve is being compressed, and the pain is being referred to my legs. It is called spinal claudication, or neurogenic claudication. I go to work with the chronic pain daily because I need to earn a living. I would do anything to make the pain go away forever. Anything.

Thanks for posting.......I hope others will also. I have wrote to both of you individually. It is sad that so many Nurses have been injured but feel that they are alone in the world....'cause it just isn't so........There is a GREAT group that has been formed now...it is called WINGS..........If you want to know more about it, let me know or do an online search of your own. I would love to hear from either of you and anyone else that might wish to respond at any time. Thanks so much, Iris

I have strained my back a few times. I fell down the stairs on my client's porch and was on partial workman's compensation for several weeks. The bruise on my right hip was awful. I couldn't stand much the first day. I have strained my back several times. I do not try to lift or turn heavy patients by myself anymore.
