Information on Laparoscopic Fundoplasty

Published

Hello....

I just got the information for the patient I will be taking care of tomorrow in clinical.

She had a Laparoscopic Fundoplasty for treatment of GERD...I am trying to get my research completed and find nothing at all in my Med-Surge book, PDA, or online that gives me the information I need to know.

I am looking for a credible, detailed explanation of the procedure, potential complications, discharge teaching...I just can't seem to find anything. I can't believe this information is not in my med-surge book. I did try looking up GERD and Hiatal hernia to see if that route would lead me to my information, but no luck :( If anyone knows of a reputable site I can go to for this information, I would greatly appreciate your input :)

2 more semesters to go! YaY

Thank you,

Dana

Google "fundoplasty" without the "laparoscopic" part. Also try fundoplication. I did both of these and there were many hits for each one. You can then ook at the list and see what's available.

Hi there and thankyou...

I definitely tried that, but then it comes up with different "added" words, which I don't understand because I don't know the procedure lol...truly. It says Nissen or Esophagogastric or Transverse or Belsey...I don't know what any of those are, we have not learned any of that yet.

I had also looked at the fundoplication. However, when I asked my instructor which one my patient had or if they were the same, she said fundoplasty.

Sorry to be a pain...

In order to get a good overview, you're just going to have to wade in and read some of these articles. No, you won't understand everything, but you'll start getting the big picture. Here is one article that did a good job of laying out the basics:

http://www.theuniversityhospital.com/cdtv/html/videosurgeryprocedures/reflux.htm

I'd stick to articles and websites geared to patients and laypersons, as these will have the easiest terminology. They will spell out some of the possible complications and side effects in less daunting terms than strictly medical sites.

BTW, not to contradict your instructor, but any procedure that reshapes or alters the fundal portion of the stomach is fundoplasty, even if it is a fundoplication. Kind of like a nose job and a chin lift are both plastic surgery, even though they are different procedures.

Best wishes.

I may be late replying, but this is the same as Lap Nissen Fundoplication. I had this procedure myself. Nissen is the surgeon who invented the procedure.

In Australia we refer to them as Nissan Fundoplications. I work with severely disabled children, many of whom have PEG tubes/gastrostomy buttons and the majority of whom have had a nissan fundoplication. In very crude terms, it involves wrapping the stomach below the oesophageal sphincter around the sphincter to strengthen it's effect and therefore prevent reflux.

Ahhh the good old Nissen. One of my favourite cases to scrub for...as long as the darn suture needle doesn't break off inside the patient....:uhoh3:
