Inconsiderate nurse managers!!!!

I'm a new grad who had a job interview a month ago on a med/surg/tele floor. I really wanted the position and thought the interview went really well! I thought I really had a lot going for me: I graduated with a 3.97, now have a BSN, worked 3 years as a CNA in a hospital, took care of 4 patients total care in my senior practicum on another tele floor, talked about my goals during the interview, asked lots of questions, and was super enthusiastic! I even sent a thank you card afer the interview, and called the nurse manager to say I was still interested and that this is my first choice...and she said I should hear a yes or not from human resources (HR) by the following week. I never heard anything for two more weeks, so I called again and was told HR would get back to me the following week. THAT week came and went and no word! Finally today I got so sick of waiting I called HR and was told "Oh, didn't you get a letter? You were supposed to get it last week!" Of course I never got anything! He said the position was already filled, but that I could apply to other positions that interested me. AUGH!!! I was never told why I didn't get it, and I don't want to call the nurse manager for the third time! Im thinking maybe an experienced nurse got it over me? Who knows what the reason! But it makes me so mad they all made me wait one month and if I didn't call I would still be left in the dark! So I'm hopefully meeting with another nurse-manager next week (I immediately contacted a second one after hearing the disappointing news) and also applied online for 6 more RN positions. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there anything else you guys think I should be doing to get a first RN job? I look online every day and check the newspapers too....don't know what else to do! All this and I'm now doing 200 practice NCLEX questions a day! Geez! I need a vacation!

Hang in there Christine. I'm sorry to hear you didn't get that job. I agree, very rude and unprofressional of this organization. You're better off knowing now they weren't for you.

Good luck on NCLEX. :)

Hi christvs! :)

I'm so sorry to hear that! It sounds like their HR department needs a little more of the "H" !!! :chuckle

You are doing the right thing and don't feel bad trying to get ahold of someone who will give you an answer!

My boyfriend is having problems like yours too. He's doing everything he should like write thank you's and calling back after a couple weeks if necessary. I think the hospitals drop the ball on their end. And it really stinks when you are trying so hard to find a job!

Basically, in theory the job you interviewed for may be great, but the staff you work with can make or break it, you know?

All I can say is hang in there and you'll pull through! :icon_hug:

Another way of looking at this is that maybe you're better off not getting a job at this place. If the nurse manager didn't care enough to respond to you in a professional manner then maybe she's not the type of person you'd want to be working for anyway.

Thanks for making me feel better! Of course what would REALLY make me feel tons better would be a good RN position! I'm doing my best to stay positive but this whole NCLEX-job process is so stressful! I think I need a really big bowl of ice cream! :) :)

I think this is a great way of thinking about the situation. Although we don't always see it, sometimes not getting what you want leads you to better things in your life............kind of like the Garth Brook's song "Unanswered Prayers".

Good luck on finding a job in the unit that you want!!

I've been there too. I was one of ONE HUNDRED applicants to get interviews. There were 11 others who were interviewd too. I didn't get the job of course, even though I did all the stuff you mentioned too. I had to call and call and call, and HR kept telling me they didn't know yet. So I finally called one of the interviewers (there were three!) and she told me that they had made decisions a week ago, and didn't I get the letter?? When I asked what I could have done better, she said the only thing I could have done better was to have already been an employee of their hospital system - all four jobs were given to internal applicants!

Unfortunately, i think a lot of HR offices are acting this way. They tend to think they only need to contact the person who they want to hire and leave others on the string wondering. It's not right and it is very rude. I think a lot has to do with cost, they seem to think it to big an expense to let those who they arent hiring know that they arent getting the job. It costs them a lot less if you contact them correct?

But, you did the right thing, keep calling them back, reminding them you are there and arent going away until they give you an answer.

Did you send a note to the interviewers afterward,, later that day or next day? Thats not a bad idea either. Make your name one they remember, in a nice way and maybe next time you will be the one that gets the letter or call. Good luck.

I sent a letter to the interviewer also! I'm finally not upset about that job anymore because the very next day after I found out I didn't get job #1, I got another interview for a different job (same type of floor-med/surg/tele) on the unit I did my senior nursing student internship......and I got the job on the spot! I'm so happy to be able to relax (except for NCLEX!!!) I start orientation as soon as I take and pass the NCLEX! :)
