In Hospital On Call

Nurses General Nursing

I work in a NICU. We take turns with the Family Birth Place nurses to fill the transition/flex role (going to all deliveries to take care of baby). Our managers have instated a new rule that when the FBP RN's fill the transition role, a NICU RN is required to take In House On Call to back up the transition RN (because NICU RN's are required at all high risk deliveries). We are required to be in house and have no specific room to stay in, so we wander the hospital hoping to find an empty patient room. We are paid minimum wage for this. 1. I find it ridiculous that we are having two people in house to fill a role that one NICU nurse could fill. 2. I have never worked at a hospital that in house on call is used as a regular staffing technique. (It happens frequently - almost every day) I'm just wondering if anyone works in a hospital where this is a common practice???

I was hired for a no call position as well. I live too far away to take call and respond within 1 hr which is our time limit. I work Endoscopy---our call time isn't as urgent as trauma or chilbirth! Anyway...6 months into my employment I was told that I would have to take call like everyone else. I spent 2 years sleeping in my car... I live in INDIANA---SNOW FREEZING TEMPS. We are not allowed to use empty patient rooms. Finally a friend opened up her home to me and I stay there when on call now for the past three years.. Weekends when I am on call we start at 530 Friday and end 7 am monday....I have to stay in town all that time.....My reimbursement 2.15 per hour.

I sympathize with you

We the direct care nurses are at the bottom of the totem pole and unfortunately, OBama is only going to make it worse.

That sucks, I don't know about you guys, but up here physicians get their own private room...if there on call.

Specializes in None.

Haven't you heard? Obama is going to ruin everything in this country....

All of our systems that were working perfectly when he took office (healthcare, financial institutions, automakers, etc.), will be ruined by that socialist Obama:icon_roll:lol2:

Why the "in house" requirement? If there was a gym close by I would be working out or at least do something productive with the down time. Maybe the physical therapy department would allow use of their equipment if it's not being used. When I worked at a hospital in Cali they allowed employees use of the PT departments' excercise equipment if it wasn't being used and it was great. It wouldn't hurt to ask.
