I'm trying to hear the Doctor!

Published

Is it just me or do you find that every doggone time you get on the phone with a doctor who talks as loud as a tiny little mouse ...you always get people around you yapping on the top of their lungs.

I have told them (through arm waving and finger snapping etc) to be quiet. I am receiving orders for a patient and I can't do that when there's unnecessary noise. Does this happen to you or am I the only one?

we have a doctor who mumbles . . . and he always seems to be at a bar (judging by the noise) when he calls back. i just yell "hello" into the phone a few times, then hang up. when he calls back, it's usually from a quieter environment and he speaks more loudly.

of course he does the same mumbly thing in person, too.

At least y'all can holler at the doc or your coworkers. Since my pay is dependent on how fast I can understand what a doc is saying, I am less than thrilled the many, many, many times I can only hear the staff in the background talking about their kids or new diet program or over-the-top guffaws that drown out the doctor's dictating. At least if the staff is going to be loud and laughing, include the doctor whose dictating in your joking around. It breaks up the workday for me when the doctor is goofy while dictating.

Otherwise, to any of you staff members in the background, have some respect for the dictation and transcription process. You mess up turnaround time on transcrptions along with being loud and annoying.

My rant is over!

Howdy. I've done many, many transcription jobs, and I've typed my fingers to the bone as well!

I always let the Drs listen to the background noise, then they realise how bad it is. And yes, people do wonder why their dictation isn't being done as fast - some background noise is just terrible. I hate it when they cough, burp, fart, sneeze and laugh into the microphone and EATING as well - soooo gross!

Unfortunately I don't have that option to let the doc hear the dictation. I work for a large national company with my accounts being a few states away from me. :)

Last night, I was speaking to a doctor on the phone. She was speaking so low and mumbly! I had to ask her to repeat herself several times, and she wasn't speaking any louder. She was getting annoyed, and I was so frustrated. So, I decided to turn the tables. I said, "Are you able to hear me? Hello?" She said she could hear me fine. So I said that the line was crackling on my end, and apologized for the poor connection. At least, then she spoke up a bit and spelled things out for me. LOL I mean, it was kind of late, around 11 pm. Maybe she was trying not to wake up her household. But, man, was that annoying!

Just one of the many lovely things about being a nurse. It is one of the many reasons i left acute care--too doggone noisy and no respect for the nurses.
