I'm a nursing student and have Guillain-Barré Syndrome

Published

When I was in second grade I had gullian burae syndrome for two weeks and I fully recuperated . However , I can't get flu shot because it cud re-trigger gullian burae syndrome .I am starting nursing school in fall 2015 and my nursing liaison got me a clinical hospital that does not require flu shot . I just want to hear what people think of my situation and do you think it will be a problem getting a good job in a a good hospital after I graduate thank you .

A history of Guillain-Barré is a contraindication for getting the flu shot. Many people with a history of GB cannot be vaccinated for the flu. Source: Vaccination: Who Should Do It, Who Should Not and Who Should Take Precautions | Seasonal Influenza (Flu) | CDC

Your link and every source I'm aware of, doesn't actually list Guillain-Barre as a contraindication, it's listed as a precaution, which are two different things.

Excellent point! I was curious, and did some reading....and it seems that there is a much higher risk of experiencing GB after exposure to the flu virus itself than with the vaccination. You'd be better off with the shot aiming to prevent the illness than contracting the illness.

This is a year and a half old, but until there's a new study, it's current:

I wear a mask probably 12 times a day according the procedures I do. Not one patient has ever asked me why I have it on.

Yes sorry for misspelling I meant that. Thank you .It's not weird for pateints to have their nurse wearing a mask?

Well.....patients may very well not ask why a nurse is wearing a mask when she's doing a procedure on/for them. They can reasonably guess that the nurse SHOULD be donning a mask for that. But they may ask why the nurse is wearing a mask each time she walks into the room to hand them pills and a cup of water.

This made me think of someone I used to work with who seemed to have a cold half of her life, and wore a mask quite a lot. Had to keep telling patients (for whom she was doing 'normal' nursing aide duties that didn't require a mask) that she had a cough, a cold, whatever...and that's why she was masked, for their protection.
