Im new, will they be mad if I go full to part time right away?

I just started a new job and I'm almost done with orientation about to be on my own next week, I haven't had the best experience at this new job because my supervisor told me she can tell I don't like my job that much. I tried to smile at her and not say anything but she is proably right, I've set my eyes on premed which will mean I need to go part time for now. Do you think they will be mad since I'm fairly new if I go to part time even though they hired me full time? I hope they will be understanding why I'm doing it.

Unfortunately, she may end up nursing her bridges if she is honest. It will send the message that you really do not like your job, and they will find someone who WILL like it. And then what will you do? How will you explain why you left this job(if you do decide to leave because you didn't get part time)?

As far as new grads go, it's never ideal for them to work part time. I'm not saying they don't get PT jobs, but being able to master your skill is difficult if you are only there 2 days a week. Repetition and continuity is so important at the novice level. It's like driving a car, or playing an instrument; if you only do it once or twice a week, it takes that much longer to master the skills.

Yes, they will be mad at you. And no one will bend over backward to accommodate you. To assume they have a part time position and that they would give it to you when your supervisor has all ready picked up on the fact you don't like the job and your proving yourself a "flake".....is unbelievable to me. You need to change your attitude, get your act together, and work this position for at least a year and prove yourself.....if they let you get that far. You are still in probation and they might just tell you....get out/you are not a right fit for us. And believe me, your reputation will follow you.

Are you for real? Did you happen to read your paperwork yet? Many places have policies in place that state you cannot move to another unit or change your work status for ___ number of hours. By me it's like 1084 hrs. Not sure where they came up with that number but it is what it is. Perhaps resign now and go pool somewhere so you can attain your goals. They could care less what your goals are, just that you don't want to be there says enough. Good luck!

When I was managing a unit, I could not just wave my magic wand and turn a full time, 1.0 FTE into something less than that. Full timers who wanted part-time had to wait until a part-time FTE became available.

Yes, I would be angry, and no, I wouldn't keep you around.

My advice is to keep your head down, mouth shut, smile a lot and be heard to speak positive words. Do your best to act like you are employee of the month. You can look for a part-time gig in the meantime, or wait for a part-time opening in your present unit (why would you even want to if you don't like it?), but I'd keep those thoughts to myself until the position was actually available.
