My name is Mandy and I want to ask a question. I'm interested in being a RN but right now it's easier for me to start out as a LPN. I've been told that LPNs are being phased out is that true or a crock?

Many hospitals eliminated their LPN positions several years ago. However, there are still LPN positions in long term care facilities, in clinics, and other settings where the patients are not as unstable as they usually are in hospitals.

A lot depends on the specific geographic region. In some areas of the country, there are more LPN jobs than in others. You'll need to find out the status in YOUR town to get the information most important to you. For example, the small town hospital near where I grew up still uses LPN's for routine care on their general med/surg units. However, I've spent most of my career in large teaching hospitals and have worked with very few LPN's in my career -- and that was a long time ago.

I have worked with very few LPN's in the hospital setting. I have seen many in the clinic and LTC setting. I think it just depends where you live. I am in MI and only see the LPN's in clinics and LTC facilities. However there are few in the acute care setting. So do some research in your local area about how many and what type of LPN jobs are available and decide from there. Good luck to you.

That one and that diploma RN's are being phased out have been around as long as I have been an RN. And that's a verrrry long time!

I wouldn't worry about it.

Almost 30 years ago when I was in high school, I was told not to pursue LPN because they were being phased out. Almost 30 years later, LPNs are still around. My school's part time class started at the beginning of the month, and another full time class starts in September.
