I'm lucky b/c I enjoy 12hr noc shifts

Published

It seems as though many of my co-workers, friends and ppl from this site have a hard time adjusting to nocs. I consider myself lucky b/c I have been doing just fine, and it hasn't messed up my internal clock at all.

I work from 6p-6a for two nights in a row. Then I am off for 48 hours, and work one more after that.

When I get off from work I go right to bed, and end up sleeping until noon. I then get up and do a few things, and take the dog for a walk. I then go to bed again at around 2ish and wake up again at around 5 to go to work.

On the nights that I am off, I follow that same schedule, but then after I wake up at Five pm, I usually stay up until 11 pm, then hit the sack nd end up sleeping all night thru. No sleeping aids needed anytime.

So far, I am not having a problem with it, then again, I haven't been doing it for very long.

Agreed. Nights don't bother me much. However between 3AM and 5AM gets a little rough. But I enjoy nights.

I used to work 7-12's in a row but I have 7 days off too. Work 7 days, off 7 days. It takes getting used to but it's really quite nice.

I've been working 12h nights for about 11 years and I wouldn't trade it! Used to work Sun, Mon, Fri...7p-7a but now Sun Tue Fri. I enjoy it because I don't have to miss out on important things ...like time with my kids. So what if daddy's at work while they sleep?? I'm home ALL DAY LONG, and that's the way it'll stay. :specs:

I enjoy working night shifts too. I have found I have a lot more time with my family and to do the things I want to. I don't have a hard time sleeping either. Of course I have always been able to sleep anytime, anywhere. My husband also works nights, so it really works well fo us.

WHOA. There is no way I could ever work 7-12's in a row.

I agree.

I work nights now in a non-med job. I'm going to do my darnedest to stay on nights after graduation.

I work 7p-7am as well, and for the most part I love it. However, I do best whenever I work 3 12's in a row and then am off for several days. Take one day to recover, and then the next three days to have fun and spend with my family and just do whatever!

My interim nurse manager had my schedule ALL screwed up during the last scheduling period. She had my days REALLY split up and I Emailed her and kindly asked her to keep my days together, in a row, as much as possible. Well, she did that, but unfortunately I'm NOT working the same three days each week! In fact, I"m working a lot of weekend days, which I'm not accustomed to. All in all though, it really isn't a bad schedule. :) I'm upset in a way because this one nurse has the cushy schedule of working T-W-Th, 7p-7a, EVERY WEEK... and once upon a time, with our other (permanent) manager, I had that same

schedule! She's been a nurse one year longer than me, and our acting manager adores her, so I guess that's why she has the soft schedule. Ah well.

I LOVE 12 hr 7p-7a! I drive 50 miles to work, so I wouldn't want to do less than 12 hr shifts. I sleep much better during the day, too. Right now I am on a weekend package - work Fri adn Sat noc, get paid for 32 hrs, and get full benefits. It works perfect with school, family, and our business.

I love them too and do a similar schedule (but not on days off when I get up at 7am but still have my afternoon nap). To do your schedule you have to be able to come right home and go to sleep - during the day - wake up - and go back to sleep again. A lot of people can't do that.

I have to give you guys props for what you do! I am not a morning person, but I would rather work mornings than nights. I like having the rest of the day for myself and my family. But, kudos to you guys who do nocs!!!:)

You ARE lucky. I hate nightshift. It wreaks havoc on my body. But I am glad you are so happy! That is great.

See, that's just the thing. I really would love day shift. I am a a morning person and day shift really flies by, or so it seemed when I did my clinicls. But, do you EVER get off on time? Most of the nurses that work on my floor on days end up staying way past 3 to catch up on charting and what not (I hear). While they are trying to catch up, they get called to a room to help transfer, or help with anything. Then often times they have to answer the phone if the clerk is elsewhere, then answer pt's families Q's, etc, etc. They can't say no to these things b/c they ARE still on the clock.
