Hello everyone!
My name is Catherine and I'm new to the site. I was needing some help about applying to schools in New York and I figured this was the best place to start. I'm not from around here, in fact I'm from very far from here. I grew up in Arkansas and got my GED when I was 15. I'm 17 now and plan to start nursing school in the fall after I am of age. Currently I attend community college and I will start my pre-nursing "sequence" this Spring 09. Do you think it's possible to be accepted into nursing school while I'm still taking pre-requisite courses? I'm taking all the courses I need to apply at Queensborough, LICHSON, PBISON, and Nassau CC. I am also wondering if anyone can tell me the deadlines for applications for these schools (for Fall 09) as I can't seem to find them on the school websites.
I appreciate all the help in advance!

Your best bet would be to call the schools nursing department or admissions department and find out the deadline date. It is possible to be accepted into nursing school while taking pre-requisite courses, but it will be based on your grades in your past classes, as your grades show your determination to succeed! Just a tid bit- I know that Nassau Community College is very competitive and they give first priority to residence of nassau county.
Good idea, for some reason I'm just nervous to call. My grades right now aren't fantastic, so I'll probably just have to wait to apply for Spring '10 anyway. Anyway, thanks for your help!
Don't be nervous to call! Administration is there to answer questions about applying! I really would wait to apply until you pull your grades up because it will give you an edge, right now since you have a GED and bad grades, it may deter them! No Harm in trying though! Good luck!!!

pretty sure, do the following:
Go to Google and enter in "CUNY nursing schools." All of the schools to which you are applying are part of City University of NY - CUNY. I just did the search and they all show up.
BTW, I started my college days at Hunter College, part of CUNY.
Good luck!

You have a huge advantage, and that is time. You have plenty of time to do this right, but you need to be patient about it. If you tried going into this with the attitude of getting through as fast as you can, you will not get through.
The GED is going to be a bit of a deterrant, at this time in your life. You need to do something to compensate for that, like take as many pre-requisites as you can. And do very well in them. You have to prove yourself to be mature, repsonsible and intelligent.
To answer your original question, you csan certaily get into some of the programs while taking pre-reqs. But the better your GPA is in them, the better your chances. Take your time and do it right. Good luck!!
