Im getting ready to CRY!

Nurses General Nursing

I am supposed to graduate this May and hopefully become an RN. I am in OB right now for the next month, then spring break, and then my final class (leadership). I have a fractured bone in my leg and am in a temporary cast until the morning when I get my walking cast. Anyways...

My school dont know what to do with me because the hospital Im at right now for clinical will not allow me on the unit with a cast. I feel like I can still handle the rotation. I understand if Im not allowed to stay at the hospital for the length of my cast wearing days but can my school make me wait a whole year to finish for a 3 week cast? Has anyone went through this?

My teacher was in a meeting today to determine the best plan of action for me but Im so scared. I have worked so hard to get where Im at and I cant see losing a year of my career because of a 3 week cast. Do any of you have an alternative idea that could help me get some clinical time for my OB?

Thanks so much. I have been in tears for a few days now.

yes my school has the case studies. from what they say we are only allowed to do two of them (one for each day up to two days). i was hoping they could give me case study after case study. im really game for anything though as long as my degree comes in may :) lol.

:o this must be sooo difficult for you! but, like someone already mentioned, everything happens for a reason.. even if its a year(thats nothing in comparison to a life time in nursing!) i had a classmate with the similar situation, and honestly, they did the same thing. they did not allow her to attend any clinicals, and she had to sit out a semester, but when she came back..she was better than ever! :specs:

do speak to them about alternatives thought, dont give up until they make final decision about your situation.

Can your clinicals be pushed back until the end of the semester? I should think that they could make an exception for you since you haven't flunked out or anything.

I sprained my ankle last spring and was completely humiliated to be limping up and down the unit with my air splint on, so I can relate to how you feel. Hoping for a speedy recovery!!

A lady in our class had a baby this semester and she had to have a full work release before she could work clinicals.

Even though clinicals were scheduled one day per week...they allowed her to meet the clinical instructor at the hospital 3 times a week to make up her time, and would have allowed her to make up clinical time only during Christmas break, if need be, but it ended up not being necessary.

Oh I remember a very similar situation when I was in my second year.

I had a work injury which ended up requiring surgery on my hand. Surgery coincided with my clinical, there was no way I could have gone whether I had the surgery or not - so it was done. I thought ok I'll just do the clinical later when I have recovered. Well come to the end of the semester - theory was going well but then the lecturer phoned and said you will fail because you don't have the clinical component. I was devastated (I was crying as I explained what had happened), she would not budge. I couldn't even get an incomplete until I could do clinical. After that phone call I turned around and organised my own disability adviser who got me on placement (to a sympathetic hospital - only thanks to the DON - her lackey didn't want me either).

I confess it was only sheer guts and determination that I made it to the end of the year with no fails. I admit there were many tears on the way. Compassion was few and far between (I got a lot of not my problem attitude from nurses and instructors).

I am praying for you (I had a friend that prayed for me and it worked), I hope that mine work for you).

Sounds like you were up against some real heartless jerks. Maybe someday they'll be your patients and you can show them that they should be grateful you made it through school, no thanks to them.

And it's a lesson in Never Give Up and in Bypass whoever you have to bypass to get what you're after.:w00t:

The hospital doesn't want the liability of you working casted, even if you feel you're able to do so.

I had to have surgery during the school year. I managed not to miss any significant class time, and kept my grades up. But I wasn't allowed to work the floor in clinicals for some time. My school allowed me to attend graduation and get pinned with my class, then I returned in August with the senior class to make up my clinical hours. They then officially graduated me and sent the info to the BON.

Perhaps you can work out something similar with your school :)

Good luck.

You are right "Never Give Up". Funny thing was my doctor kept saying you can't do it - you will never be able to nurse with "this injury", oooh made me so angry (still I really like this doc - value his opinion), and more determined than ever. Well he saw me in my RN uniform and looked pleasantly suprised (and no brace on my hand ;)).

Still I have one more thing to prove, he said that I will never be able to be a midwife (start course in March), that I wouldn't make a manager (inclined to agree there) but would make a fantastic teacher (for some reason he thinks I have the patience of a saint ).

I have faith in determination when the heart is really set on it.

ok i have good news. i went to the docs today to get the walking cast on and he says i dont even need a cast since its not a weight bearing bone. i have been walking on it all day and cant even tell that its fractured. he gave me a note for my school permitting me to do clinicals with no restrictions. so i called my teacher left a voicemail and told her that i would see her in clinical on monday. i have not gotten a call back so i guess no news is good news. im sure they will let me stay now.

thank you all for the support! and prayers!
