Illegal Drugs At Work?

Published

Thought i'd see what you guys think about this....

I was in class today and some of the girls were talking about their CNA jobs....one gal brought up drug testing and how if they implemented drug tests in her LTCF then they would lose half the staff!! She goes on to say that not only do atleast half the staff use cocaine, heroin and marajiuana they do it on their breaks at work! If that isn't enough the LTCF she is talking about is the one my grandmother lived in for awhile before she died (she lived there about 10 yrs ago). I don't understand how these people get away with this! How do their managers not know, especially if they are doing it on their break at work??? Also arent drug tests mandatory at all health care facilities?? Years ago when my grandmother was cared for there the nursing staff seemed great...i was there atleast 2ce a week and my mom atleast 3-4 I never noticed this...we live in a great neighborhood and have never encountered anything like this before...what do you guys think I should do? I haven't seen this directly, just heard from the girl in my class. I would hate for anyone to get hurt (patients) if it is true though....

oh my and she counsels at risk teens...sigh...lol when she made the comment about the baby thing did you ask her if she had any children herself, it wouldve been funny if she had like 3 girls....

anyway kcrow...i wouldve done the same thing!! what business did he have coming to a clinical HIGH??!? dont feel bad if i had a problem like that id be thankful you turned me before i did something stupid (ie kill someone while high) and made a mess out of my life and my career...i dont understand people, i mean he had to have worked hard to get to that point, going through all the clincals classes just to throw it away?? dont get it...

it is sad about the CNA's..if they really are high on cocaine and heroin then i cant even imagine what kind of care their patients are getting.....

by the way what does ETOH stand for, ive never heard of this test...i assume its an alcohol brethalizer? ive never heard of anyone giving that?

ETOH = alcohol

Nah, in her mind it was OK because she was married before she had sex. Or so she says. I think she only had one boy because if her theory is right that boys come from "one time encounters", I can see that happening. I don't think that she was sexually savvy. She seemed quite repressed actually, which probably made her the perfect houseparent for unwed mothers.

She did say some really wild things. A lot of myths mostly. She didn't let the girls reach for something on a high shelf. She was a firm believer that if you raise your hands above your head while pg the cord would wrap around the baby's neck and kill it. I really had to bite my tongue when she would give misinformation to the girls. While I didn't correct her in front of the girls, I would talk to them privately that while she meant well, she didn't have her facts straight, especially the part about frequent teenage sex leading to a baby girl vs. one time encounter = boy.

One time a girl presented to the CNM with pitting edema, close to spilling protein, and high BP. The CNM wanted to try to keep her out of the hospital and put this 17y.o. girl on bedrest. At that point, I had worked in L&D in several capacities and was a certified labor doula, so I knew my medical stuff. I told the girl to go straight to bed and that I'd talk with the houseparent. The houseparent didn't seem to understand the gravity of the situation. I had my own BP cuff and was certified to take BP's, but the HM was insistent that she knew how to do BP's better than myself because she had a $5 home BP monitor from WalGreens that "did a fine job." When I explained to her that the girl needed to be on bedrest for preemclampsia, she said, "Big deal. She can do stuff." I insisted that she stay in bed because of all her symptoms plus her pitting edema. She said to me, "So? I have pitting edema and I'm up and going." I told her, "Yeah, but you are you pregnant?"

I was so glad to leave that job. Between the HM's laziness and stupidity and my supervisor had me on duty 8 days straight w/o a break, and expected me to be there the next morning at 7am when the HM came back so she wouldn't have to take them to school (she and her husband just got back from vacation - they were rested while I was up every night with some girl who claimed to be in labor and HAD to go to the hospital for the past 7 nights), I said "NO WAY!" It was too much and the supe misrepresented the hours I was supposed to work. Plus the salary was a lie.

The big kicker was when I was attacked for the second time by a 5'10" surly girl who had a good 60lbs. on me. I nearly called the police and I should have, but they were into the "forgive and forget." I'm here, this has happened the second time. If you all don't do anything, I'm gone. Nothing was done and I was gone. And there was no talking me back in. The HM pleaded with me because if I didn't come back, that would mess up her vacation... the second 2 week vacation in as many months.

Sorry, I sort of got to venting here. I'll give you back to your regularly scheduled programming consisting of employees doing bad drugs at work. :)

lol no prob all vents welcome!! i would have quit too! it irks me that so many employers (not just in the medical field) aim for retention with their employees but it sometimes it seems like they arent trying very hard, have you ever felt like you came dead last?? Ive worked at places where ive felt completely expendable, like it didnt matter all the hard work i had put in, it was very frustrating!!! the customer is always right..arg..lol...any other vents lol?
