does IL recognize deaconess grads?

Hi everyone! I am an LPN in IL, i know that my state does not recognize excelsior degrees......but do they consider deaconess? the program sounds awesome. thanks for any info you can provide!

Since I do not have any clinical experience I was told by EC that their program wasn't an option for me. So this pretty much just left Deaconess as the best alternate choice. Also another plus for me is that since I live in St. Louis the clinical evaluations would be very easy for me to get to. I am not sure why others have choosen DCN over EC, it would be interesting to hear what others have to say.:)

Kelly,

BE CAREFUL. You had better find out where you can do clinicals BEFORE you get into this program. I can tell you that the only place that would let us in was Forest Park. You can forget about any of the SSM's, Barnes, etc. I live near St. Louis, and hospitals wouldn't let us in because of serious liability issues with regard to clinicals. And Deaconess wouldn't give us names of places that would take us for clinicals, probably because there weren't any or they were so poor they shouldn't be clinical sites.

Thank you,

When I first checked into this I found out from St. John's that they were no longer takng Deaconess students. Then almost a year later I spoke with Deaconess and they said while that had been previously true. they had now worked out an agreement with St. John's to take Deaconess students. Based on your post I now have renewed concerns. Did you speak with the Clinical

Coordinator? I think that I will make some phone calls myself (after my Microbiology test on Thursday!!) and see if I can find a hospital to work with. Oh how I wish this process was easier!!

I think that some of the St. Louis students did have a hard time last year with clinical placement. The hospitals probably had an influx of student inquiries and couldn't handle it. From what I understand things are going a little smoother and DCN has pre-arranged clinical sites for the local students.

Just make sure you check all the facts before you get too nervous. From what I remember the locals students are doing clinical groups at FP. Hopefully they will work all the bugs out and the program will continue to improve.

Good Luck

Kelly,

Please be sure to contact Deaconess and their clinical liason for detailed information regarding clinical sites. I have spoken with the liason on several occasions, often when she initiated the call to be sure that I had a supportive environment to complete my clinicals in and to ensure my satisfaction with the support I was receiving.

My Deaconess class is unique in that of the 15 of us...12 are located in the St Louis area. I will ask each of them for additional information tomorrow to clarify where they are doing their clinical rotations. Perhaps there was difficulty in the past with St Louis clinicals but as of this semester I have not heard of any such problems.

Cheri,

I'm sorry that it took me so long to get back to you. I am in the middle of a microbiology nightmare. Any information regarding clinicals would be appreciated. Also, I am wondering if you or anyone else has heard that there is much more competition for these online nursing spots then there used to be. I had read on one of the boards here that 300 people had tried to get in the program with only a few spots available. I would like to make sure that I am in the program but I was told by the ADN advisor that Deaconess would not even look at my application for fall 2005 until after they selected the summer 05 students. In the mean time I am wondering if I should start to make backup plans in case I am not accepted. I am not sure if Deaconess looks at GPA (I think mine would be okay at 3.4) or first come/first in. Thank you so much for your help!

Competition for Deaconess is high. There were over 400 people that applied for Fall and they only had 20 spots. I don't know what they base acceptance on. I would say GPA would be one and also if you have any prereqs done. I have a friend that tried to get in for Fall and she didn't make it. They said it was because she didn't have any college. She's now taking some prereqs and will try again.

Good Luck

Wow! Now I'm really dicouraged. I do have 42 hours of college and after this micro class the only prereq left would be sociology which I am hoping to clep. I read in one of the posts that you are in your 4th semester at DCN, are you happy with the program? Knowing what you know now would you do the online again? Did you have any trouble finding clinical sites?

Thanks for the info!

What St. John's are you referring to? I live near a St. John's facility in Michigan and hope that I work out clinicals with them when I get to that junction. I'm still awaiting info from Deaconess.

I was speaking of the one here in St. Louis. Are you just starting this fall at DCN or was this summer your first semester?
