Its 3:30pm school is out at 3:50pm. A student comes in at 3:33PM c/o sore throat. His temp. is normal. No sign of irritation on throat. I tell him to drink water and I send him back to class to get ready for dismissal. Now its 3:40pm a parent is in my office asking where her son is because she got a phone call to pick him up. I was furious.:banghead::banghead::banghead:. First of all there is less than 20 minutes less of school. No fever no other s/s , the child can make it through the next 20 minutes until dismissal. Instead, the teacher calls his mother and have her pick him up for a 10 minute early dismissal. :banghead:

What in the world am I doing here if the teachers/staff think they have better judgement. ? All I can do is apologize to the poor parent. :zzzzz

I would have sent the parent to the teacher's classroom to deal with it.

You know, it has taken me 6 years of this to figure out- the teacher or teacher's aide have already made the decision as to what I am to do for this student before they even get to my office! When I use some skill/judgement that does not jive with "he needs to go home", some can get downright insulting! After all, they must know that I DID find my licensure and degree in a Crackerjack box.....:banghead:

You don't know how many times I have wanted to say, "Go back to school, get a nursing degree and come take my job because evidently you want to be a nurse instead of a teacher!" Or "If you are going to go behind my back and call the parent, then why send them to me? Handle the whole thing yourself and stop wasting my time." It is frustrating, but I guess we will always have teachers/staff that just do not agree or trust our judgement.

In the beginning of year, during our staff meeting, I always ask that if they do not agree with my decision to send the child back to me with a note explaining why. I explain to them that I have had parents call me wanting to know why I sent their child home sick when they were not sick. All I can tell the parent is either 'I did not call or even worse, that I NEVER saw their child, someone else must have called". Explaining this has helped, but I still have 2 or 3 teachers that just can't seem to help themselves and they continue to contact the parent without my knowledge.

Oh well, we have to let it go!!

OK, you must work at my old school where I was the nurse. That drove me nuts!!! I would always get parents calling me wanting to know why their child called, and do they have a fever? I had never even saw them, the teacher would call and tell mom to come get them. Or worse, I would see them and send them back to class and like you, next thing you know mom or dad shows up to pick them up because the teacher called. ARRRGHHH!!!!!

never mind

Every state is different, but in Pennsylvania, you need a BSN and a School Nurse Certification (about another 10 credits) then to be permanently certified, you need an additional 24 credits. Studentnurse19 is probably considered a "health room aid" or a "nurse assistant" She has an RN who oversees her. Most schools like this type of situation because they don't want to pay for a nurse. I worked as a "nurse aid" for a few years even though I was an RN because I wanted ot work in the schools.

You're right ! I hope I didn't confuse anyone. When I say "us" I mean health room staff. I've never ever in my whole time working as a health aide called myself a nurse. I think its unfair , cruel, and illegal for any unlicensed person as my self to call them selves a nurse. Yes, the whole school calls me the school nurse and thats a whole other story... And yes they know I'm a student and a CNA but they just can't help themselves, I guess its because I'm in the HR more than the overseeing RN. Anyway, just wanted to clear that up.

When I do get licensed I don't plan to work as a school nurse. I would like to get some experience under my belt and I may come back to it if I get burned out or something.

Back to the topic- Its nice to see that I'm not alone in this. I just feel so disrespected by these teachers and staff they are so inconsiderate sometimes.
