I'm starting a blanket thread, rather than doing individual posts like I have been the last few days, because this might get some people's attention better.
The word "Nurse" is a legally protected title in most states (as well as "LVN/LPN", and "RN"). The law was written to prevent people who are NOT nurses from using those titles.
Beyond that, if you are posting ON THIS WEBSITE, AllNurses.com has a clear Terms of Service posted that you agreed to when registering for a username. To put it simply, you may not use the word "Nurse" or "RN" or "LPN" unless you hold an active LICENSE for one of those titles.
Usernames such as Nurse2Be, or FutureRN, or HopeToBeLVN are obviously not in violation of the TOS, as it is clear that the member is not misrepresenting himself or herself as a current nurse.
If you are someone who has mistakenly registered an incorrect username, please take the time to CHANGE IT. There are many members here who will be angry with seeing your fraudulent use of the title; some will be nice about it and ask you politely to change it (as I am doing) and some will be far less pleasant....and both will be right.
CNAs, MAs, who are using the word Nurse in your name....please stop. Students, post-students who have yet to pass the NCLEX, please do not use a title you have not earned.
You wouldn't call yourself Doctor Sally (I don't think?) if you aren't a doctor. Please give Nurses the same consideration.
Thank you.
That still doesn't make it my real name, and btw I don't have to hide or be afraid of being me. I have sufficient protection!Jody Abrams
Then what is that signature at the bottom of your posts??
And, it's not about being afraid; it's about the nursing profession being a "small world"; instructors and employers frequent this site; when you want that dream job, or a new opportunity, you posts are here forever, and it will have a factor; social media can and is a factor for many either getting a job or advancement; best bet is to use social media WISELY.
Wow, such anger & hate!!! Didn't know adding a user name to "claim" the status you are striving for was such an offense. I definitely wasn't trying to claim or offend which is why I put student. I will change mine out of respect to the profession.
Strictly an observer here, but in 139 posts, I haven't seen any anger and hate from the nursing contingent; only from the non-nurses who seem to think they should be allowed to use the title at will. Now about your avatar . . . .
I was shown this site by a fellow student nurse & didn't realize there were rules but I have no problem adhering to policies. I thought it was a site for fellow students & nurses to help each other & confer not chastise. Thanks for your dedication & have a pleasant day.
RNsRWe took the time (and made the effort) to point out that using the title "nurse" when it hasn't been earned is both illegal and inappropriate, not to mention against the TOS of this site. Whether you LIKE what she has to say or not, that information would be helpful to you -- if you actually took it in. Sometimes chastising IS helping.
Perhaps I can do as I please, I've stated I had no problem following rules. FYI, how do you know that's my real name? You don't know me.Jody Abrams
I'm fairly sure it's your real name, and that you're using the title "Nurse" on your Twitter account. If I can find your Twitter account -- with another identifying picture and your inappropriate use of the title "Nurse" -- what do you bet your school's IT department can find it, too? And any actual or potential employers?
Are you on Twitter, perchance? Because the lady I found by the same name suuuuure looks like you.Yep, it's just that easy with a name and photo.
BTW, your haircut looks nice.
See? I'm a few clicks away from knowing all about you.
THAT is why you should care about social networking, especially on networks that are meant to be anonymous like AN.
Ya beat me to it!
It's sad that you so-called real Nurses have all this time on your hands to search all over sites that people can clearly put any info they want on. Just as you scary ones have. I have nothing to be afraid of and I've said nothing for a school or employer to be concerned about. I started off by saying I would change my username out of respect and have done just that. But you old bats are still haggling me.

Well, that's mature. Turning to threats and insults when someone calls you on how unprofessional and at-risk you're putting yourself. At least it's members of this board that are searching you, and not an employer or your school...yet.

I'd be more concerned if I were able to be identified in 2 seconds on a simple internet search. If you're a real nurse, you're much more naïve than you ought to be.
I'll let those reading this board determine who's more pathetic and immature--the nurse warning you or the nurse hopeful ignoring the warning.
