Hello All,
I am currently in a BSN program and have a 3.9 GPA, however in my fundamentals class I am one skill fail away from failing the entire course. This is all so shocking to me because I am a very hard working student who gets good grades, however I automatically failed a skill for not bringing a bag to class that was not even needed that day. I still have a chance to pass but just in case I don't pass, I would like to know if I fail this class and have an F on my transcript will it hurt my chances of getting accepted to NP school? If I fail the course my GPA will drop to a 3.5, and then will go up slightly once I retake the class and get a better grade (hopefully an A), but I am worried that NP programs will see the F I got the first time and turn me away. Can anyone who has seen anyone in a similar situation let me know what they think would happen?

It won't hurt if you do very well in future classes. Also, NP programs just aren't at all competitive unless you're only interested in high-ranked programs or CRNA.
Hi,
Thank you for your reply! I would be happy going to a reputable school, it does not have to be the highest ranking but somewhere that is still respected and somewhere that is not for-profit like I am at now. I feel like they are quick to fail us to make more money on class repeats. So do you really think I would still have a chance? I have two skills left I have to perform without fails, however, thinking this professor is out to fail me for anything. So depressed right now

I don't think this will have much impact. Sadly, NP programs are not that competitive.

Most look at your over-all GPA. The reputable schools will typically break down your previous credits and calculate a GPA for nursing courses, science/nursing-related courses, mathematics, and non-nursing courses when they're evaluating your transcript. How much weight they put into each category is up to the school. I've not been in your particular situation, however.
Most schools post the minimum GPA required to apply on their web sites. The good schools are going to want higher than minimum. The average seems to be around a 3.2 cumulative GPA.

I was accepted with a 2.86 GPA and a failed course that I retook (family emergency, got a 0 on the final). One F that you replace later won't hurt you

I think you will be fine if you pass the second time and have a good GPA overall.
I do also think it is worth discussing with your instructor. Let them know that you really want to be a nurse and do well in this class and ask what you can do to improve your skills.

Asking that question is like asking if getting fired from a job in your past will hurt your chances of getting hired at a hospital. Both yes and no. It depends on them and what their expectations of you are.
Some will look at your fail and decide they don't want you, others will only look at the fact that you after you retook the class, you did finish school and graduate.
