I am sure Suzanne has a competent response, but from what I know you dont need the English test for any BON. You need it for VCS and immigration purposes. I am taking IELTS coz TOEFL has 2 parts with the speaking test and I had TOEFL 4 years ago. It was long test and seems much more difficult than IELTS. This is just my opinion. Will tell you for sure after my exam on 11th of march :sofahider Just wait for Suzanne's response to be sure.

Some BONs actually have language requirements and will not let you take the NCLEX exam until you have proof of passing the English exams. Some are TOEFL, and some are actually the TSE.
The reason that I always recommend the IELTS over the TOEFL series is that most have issues with the speaking part. With the IELTS, you get a human 1:1, with TOEFL, you speak into esnetially a tape recorder. Soem do not do well that way, especially the Filipinos. They do much better with the IELTS series.
Massachusetts has required the TSE, Maryland the TOEFL, Illinois the TOEFL.
California lists a requirement of passing the English exam but they do not ask for any documentation, the others do. There are other states as well.

I am scheduled to take the TOEFl exam on March 8. I have no plans to join a review class and the only way I/m preparing myself for it is by going over the sample questions downloaded from toefl site. U think this is sufficient preparation for someone like me who comes from a non-English community?

I am on the same boat as u.U sound very brave. I have IELTS on march 9-spoken and march 11- written, reading and listening. I've got IELTS specimen materials and SES online, as advised by many international nurses.I am bad in reading and not that good in writing, but practising made a big difference.
I had TOEFL few years back and I didnt like te grammar questions. U dont have much time, so, practise as mush as u can. U know the golden rule: Practice, practice, practice... It works
Good luck to u and share the expirience with us, please!

i took the toefl test last wed, mar 8. I think I met the illinois score requiremnt of 213 based on the initial score i received after the test. I dunno my final score yet tho; it will come in abt two wks after my essay is graded. the exam was hard. u need to really concentrate esp on the listening part. i got a mere 22 for this, which is not surprising because a lot of things were bothering me then. i liked the structure and reading portions. I almost got perfect scores on these areas. but the essay part, oh i will not be surprised if i scored low on this. i was nt able to complete it; there was no conclusion at all. so my advice to u-at least for the essay writing, is- dont use scratch paper. u will not have enough time to encode what's in that draft. the screen will automatically clear up, as what happened to me
that was my sad(?) experience. but at least im done. good luck to u.

Say a prayer for me, my turn is tomorrow. I had the spoken part (IELTS) yesterday and I was very nervous, though I forced myself to smile all the time. Ive got very silly and boring questions and I could do better, if I could only relax.... And some easy words were not coming to my mind even:mad:
Tomorrow is the written part, listening is not that bad with me, but the reading and essay writing are of a concern.
Good luck with ur results. Keep remembering, that whatever the result are, it is not the end of the world. We can sit for TOEFL and IELTS again, right?
Keep us posted!

I will pray for you. GOOD LUCK!
Thanks!!!!
On 9th I had spoken IELTS. I was very nervous! I had written IELTS on 11th and there was my surprise. Listening was OK, reading was bad, really, i had to guess many questions as I didnt have time left. I used all the rules I learned with Scotts English... My surprise was the essay. I always have a problem with the writing of an essay, even in my language... But the chart was very good and the essay was even better, it was flowing very smoothly.
So, the one I was worried about the most didnt cause me any concern. Im not happy from the reading. I know what is my problem, though. I read mainly nursing books and health publications. When it comes to other topic I am not that familiar with the vocabulary used.
Results r out on 23d. Good luck to u too. Thanx for the prayer, Griffinius!
Have a good day
i have no doubt in my mind you made it. congratulations!!!!
