IELTS! I am terrified

Published

I am having my IELTS on 11th of march and since I scheduled my exam I've been having butterflies in my stomach. I purchaced the IELTS specimen materials but I am not sure that this is the only help I need.

Can you advise me on any helpful site that I can use?

Where can I get some tips about the exam?

The worst is that CGFNS requires the Academic module which is much more difficult than the General training module.

Please, share your experience about the English exam.

Thank you

Hi, I took my IELTS in sept last year.

I was also very nervous!! I did the same as you did, bought some training material from IELTS. It was really helpful for me.

As I studied it over and over I came to the conclusion that the writing part really where going to fail me.

The speaking, reading and listening I was more confident of.

When I did the speaking part it wasn´t so difficult after all. I had gotten used to speaking english with my agency already maybe that helped.

Then as the test went on I was more and more nervous because I knew the writing part where coming in last.

And as I predicted- it was difficult for me! I didn´t even write the number of words that where required for each task, and I felt like an idiot leaving the test early.

But, I passed anyway! I got 7 on the speaking module and 6.5 overall band score! And that is exactly what is required to be accepted.

So good luck to you, study in advance and do your best and the rest will come to you!!

Thank you, Aelsa! U made my day! Did u use the specimen materials from IELTS only?

It isn't CGFNS that makes these requirements, it is the US Government. CGFNS is only contracted by them to handle programs for them.

i would also feel the same way before actually taking the test. i was so scared specially with the speaking part...but it is not that difficult as we believe. all you need to know is be familiar with the exam...there are only two parts(writing and reading) that are different in academic module.

read more and more(professional journals, newspapers etc..)that will make your reading skills better and it will also help you in writing module.

if you have a good internet access take online course www.scottsenglish.com this is a very wonderful site. it will help you a lot. once you enroll, you can also send your writings to them for correction. the teacher will analyze your answer and send comment verification and corrected answer, word by word. if you need more information and if you want a copy of corrected writing task just e-mail me. good luck.

i love www.scottsenglish.com. they are the ones that i always recommend. they are actually based out of australia and do a wonderful job. they specialize in preparing students for the ielts series.

yes, i happened to know about this site from you. i had a chance to use this only for 12 days but that helped me a lot. i had not bought any books and any materials, was travelling to other places; did not even have access to computer for one month. the exam was approaching. but only the 12 days of review with scott's english success helped me boost my confidence. i got 7 in all 3 bands with 8 in listening. i give the credit to scott.

Thank you, Aelsa! U made my day! Did u use the specimen materials from IELTS only?

Yes, I only used the specimen from the IELTS.

Plus I visited the website http://www.ieltshelpnow.com and followed their advice and practice samples.

Good Luck!!

Thank you for the advice. I got Scott's English and I am trying it now. Seems very good and interactive.

Do you think I have enough time to prepair? My exam is on march, 11th...

Starbin, did you prepair for 12 days only? Seems your English was very good to start with, or you are just smart. Have a good day :)

i had been studying english since the age 4. even though our native language is not english, all text books were in english from my primary school to nursing school...

any exam needs a good preparation. i was scared about the spoken part because this was the one which i was not exposed to much. but i was in the states for almost 7 months(while i took the test), and i think it helped me improve my speaking english as well. besides that i was regularly reading journals and books. i was also writing some articles for newspapers..so i think everything helped me. it is not like i just prepared for 12 days and took the exam....i was exposed to english almost everyday..but those last 12 days, i prepared specifically and systematically for ielts(with the help of scotts english success) and passed.

ielts is not that difficult but every language test is difficult..even for the native speaker.(if i took the language test for my native language, i am sure i will fail in grammer and sentence stucture..he he..)all you ahve to do is be familiar with the exam....and prepare accordingly.

Hi!

I want to wish you guys the best of luck for the IELTS! You should not worry about the listening part at all; it is very clear and very slow. Just make sure you read all the questions carefully - and have your full attention to small detail. I actually had to make a guess because something just slipped by me!

My horrid, absolutely ghastly experience was the writing part - and I am so used to reporting in other languages! Right, the subject was just so ... so freaky, I did not have an opinion, this way or that way; did not know much about it either. Your best bet is to practice making fast essays pro/ con / opinion on different subjects. Make fast scetches to organise and structure your opinions about the issue in question. I spent too much time just looking at the task and cursing silently :angryfire - at the end I only had a very short time to complete the job. With bad results. I got a seven, with a bad comment. Well, it is a language test, not one on sociology, right?

In reading, you'll need to read fast and do use a pencil to highlight the main points on the first go. This will help you when you go back. The questions are not conventional at all!

Speaking was nice and slow, like an interview, but I noticed she made a mark when I made a mistake of an article or preposition. Had an eight on this one, but I was expecting better.

My band score, whatever it means, was eight; and I can tell you TOEFL was much gentler! Hopefully, I will never have to IELTS again!

Good luck to all of you with the task ahead

Geena

Thank you for the nice tips, Geena!

I am worried about the written part mainly. I've got the Scotts English Success online studing and I am exercising. Can u share what was the subject on your written task, please!

Hello!

Happy to share experiences! The graph I had to make sense of was about several different car models; you had to compare them and explain your findings. Not so hard, just be structured - and don't ramble.

Then, the essay, the subject left me looking like this  , was something like society/ consumerism... I just remember thinking if I had had to write it in my native language; I would have been looking at a C minus tops!

I am sure there are many interesting subjects - I just happened to get one I had nothing to say about!

Have a good one! Geena :balloons:
