IELTS - BC or IDP?

World International

Published

Hi again...I am planning to take IELTS soon here in Manila. I heard that British Council examiners are much more generous in giving higher band rates than IDP examiners. Is this true?

I am not quite good in speaking but confident in reading, listening, and writing English. Can anyone advise me of a good review center?

Hey uberdoog, where in the world is "sans frontieres"? :) Is that San Francisco?

Even if you dont pass the Local NLE June 2006, you can still proceed to apply with IELTS and file for NCLEX - RN. Your Philippine license is not a requirement. :twocents:

If you don't know how to apply on the internet the review center can help you process your ielts application. I think its an added service if you have your review with them. Just pick out a good review center and ask they really have it for free. Some take advantage of it and ask for an additional fee. Goodluck in applying. Me too i'll be taking it this coming months...

In lieu of preparing for my IELTS examination, AllNurses, Time, Newsweek and national newspapers have been an everyday companion of my life since then. The editorials and opinions helped me improve my vocabulary and ideas regarding different issues in our society.

I am not fluent in English nor born as a writer; the fact that I need to get a band score of 7 in writing, listening, speaking and reading to be qualified for my Nursing Registration in New Zealand.

I rigidly study most of your columns. Based from my instructors from a review center, I improved my writing, I could be a writer.

However, for the 3rd time that I took this IELTS (International English Language Test System)... my score in writing remained 6 since my first take!! In fact, my listening is 8.5/9; reading and speaking both 7/9 with a total band score of 7 (7.12).

This doesn't make any sense at all... I heard that IELTS raters or examiners would only give a candidate a 7 or above in writing or any task after several takes, and preferably in Baguio, Philippines.

As an aspiring Filipina nurse, with one dream, to be in New Zealand, and elevate my families suffering. Is IELTS administered from Cambridge University thru British Council and Australia IDP a good business venture for Philippine Nurses? Are nurses not capable to be competent or proficient in writing English tasks?

Are Filipinos deprived for gaining their desire band score for they do not write coherently? I've been desperate and felt that I wasted huge amount of money, yet, unlucky to gain a band score.

I would not end this journey; to take the IELTS until I gain my desire band; for I could not waste my Registration in New Zealand after paying the fees.

Aside from speaking my second most weakness is writing. I don't know what my review center taught me plus my own review with writing, luckily the British Council gave me a 7 in writing. Even though I was kind of short of time and wasn't able to recheck what I wrote still I was able to finish it right on time. I just wrote and wrote what was on my mind that I was able to occupy all the spaces provided.

From what my review center taught me is that there are hundreds of approach to have a good score. Basically I think what they taught me is one the best. May I suggest that you come up with a whole new approach. Different style of grouping the thoughts you are trying to convey...

Godbless to your quest in having a 7 in writing...

I think no matter how good you are in writing, it sometimes depends on the generosity or standards of the the one scoring your essay. This is also true with the speaking section.I have a friend who haven't enough time writing her essay ,everyone agrees that her english is really bad but got the same score as my friend who was confident to get a higher score(and really good in writing). If you did everything to get a high score but end up low, the next time you take, just pray to have a generous examiner. I had also an ielts writing score of 6, but it's ok coz my overall is good for US application. I just find it weird when I took toefl (I also took toefl before ielts) coz I had a perfect score in writing which I think is odd coz I know for sure my essay was underlength and incoherent(wasn't prepared for that exam).

actually, i was not able to use it because i checked it a few weeks before my test. i thought paying a month's subscription for a few weeks use would not be a wise move. nonetheless, i think their rates are reasonable plus the fact that you'll be learning at the comfort of your home.

anyway, i just prepared using the books recommended in the idp website-- ielts on track and 101 helpful hints for ielts. those books really helped me when i took the ielts test last march 31. actually, i only got hold of the result last week and thank god for the good scores. you can do it on your own, just be diligent and have faith.
