What is your "High 5" program and what recognition and/or incentives does it involve? What engagement "behaviors" specifically are you looking to elicit?

High 5's are when u praise someone for doing a GREAT job, or constantly staying late, or just something going above and beyond. If you get 5 of them, you get a WAWA gift card, or credit to the cafeteria.

I am looking for ideas I can use on the unit to praise employees, help solve issues, increase efficiency, increase professional development. stuff like that. do you have any great ideas????!!!!!!

Constantly staying late is not something staff should be aspiring to do; management should be hiring enough staff to provide adequate coverage.

Ask your employees for their own ideas on what helps engage them in the workplace. Survey the employees to determine what the majority think is needed to improve their working conditions, is it; praise? greater ability to solve issues? increased efficiency? or increased opportunities for professional development?

If you don't have your employees input, you are most likely throwing bandaid solutions on problems that are not a priority in the employees' minds.

I did a survey of my staff, the majority said that words made them feel most appreciated in the work place.

I've received hand written cards with gift cards enclosed. The written card meant so much more to me.

Seriously , people are praised for staying late? Is this due to understaffing? Here is an idea- see if you can get the suits to hire adequate staffing. It is like a miracle drug...!

We have many nurses than are willing to stay an extra 15 min to finish cases. Granted , it doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, we are very thankful to have these dedicated nurses. Hiring more people is out of my control. I am looking for ideas to thank and recognize our staff for the great job they do everyday. I already know the issues on my unit, and have input from the staff. This post is not for negatively.

I am looking to see what other hospitals do to recognize their staff. So, to all the people who commented on this post, what does your hospital or mananger do let the staff know they are appreciated?

Our's did absolutely nothing, which is why the turn over rate is so high. Nothing that we did was ever acknowledged, but seriously, forget to chart a resp. rate post nebulizer once and they would have a fit. A thank you would have gone a long, long way!
