Idaho ADN interested in CA jobs

U.S.A. California

Hi CA Nurses- I am going to be graduating May and I am interested in the job market for new grads in CA. I am primarily interested in Northern CA. I currently live in Idaho. I know all the scary stories, but I want honest input. Should I keep trying to work in my state until I get experience and then go for CA at a later time? Is a BSN imperative? Does having a bachelors in another management field help in any way? Does anyone suggest that I become specialized before attempting a move. What are the licensing issues of changing states? I would really appreciate advice.:nurse:

Yeah, honestly you aren't going to hear anything new. The many previous threads speak for themselves. I have classmates from northern california I graduated with in January of 2009 with many years of LVN hospital experience, and they still do not have employment, or it's in some bizarre sort of home health job not related to what they wanted to do.

I don't believe an unrelated degree will help you in anyway, what they want is experience, lots of it, and then you still have to be lucky.

Thanks for your reply. I was afraid of that. I will keep reading All nurses for info. :)

Specializes in Trauma ICU, Peds ICU.

There are people in northern California who graduated with BSNs two years ago and haven't found work.

Do not move here unless you already have a job in place waiting for you. Our cost of living is one of the highest in the country and you'll find yourself in trouble quickly if you're unable to get work.

Thanks for the advice. I will stay in Idaho until I have experience and then consider moving.

i moved from Idaho back to the bay area as an ADN RN. i was lucky enough to find a job at a skilled nursing rehab facility (after 3 months of searching), but i've been "stuck" here for almost 2 years. there is absolutely nothing out there for RN's at the moment, especially ADN RN's, and/or new grads. i've been looking for over a year. really do your research before moving, and make sure you have enough money to live off for awhile.
