ICU nurse to OB/GYN nursing???

ok... i've made a career decision to leave the icu (after four years), and start working towards a career in ob/gyn nursing. i just wanted to know if anyone else out there has made this same transition.

after doing a lot of research, i thought i would start in mother/baby, antepartum or postpartum... (it's next to impossible to start in l&d). much to my surprise, i had an interview for antepartum- and the manager offered me either antepartum or l&d!!! (she said with my critical care experience, i should be fine). :rolleyes:

so confused! :uhoh3: i came to grips with having to start out anywhere but l&d... now i feel compelled to jump on this rare opportunity! i truly do want to do l&d- i just hope i'm not jumping in - instead of easing in by starting out with mother/baby/antepartum/postpartum/etc...

(oh- the l&d position is in the same hospital where i'm currently an icu nurse... they only averaged 1900 deliveries last year... but are totally renovating and expecting to up their numbers to 2500 this year...)

any suggestions???

GO FOR IT!! After ICU, L&D will be almost easy for you. You have a new vocabulary to learn and, well, I guess you have a lot to learn! But the main thing you already have is vigilance and a thorough understanding that things can change radically in a matter of seconds.

We had an ICU person at my last job and I LOVED to work with her. When a mom needed to go on pressors and such after DIC and lots of blood, it was nice to have someone on board who considered that kind of normal. You will find yourself at home. Good Luck!!

I think you should go for the L&D after being an ICU RN. I am an ICU RN, and was previously a med-surg RN, and I can say from my experience,I like the freedom of ICU, and think there would be more freedom in L&D than versus a post partum unit where you might just be more of a med-surg type of nursing.

I was an ICU nurse for 5 years when I felt the need to go to OB. I had no experience whatsoever, but they took a chance on me and it has been the best thing I have ever done. I think your experience in ICU will be a huge plus. Go for the L&D...I think you will be just fine.

I think you should go with the L&D position! I think L&D can be just like working in an ICU if you have unforeseen problems arise. The critical thinking skills you have are priceless!

OMG yes, go for it. There are so many things an ICU nurse can bring to OB-----we would LOVE TO HAVE YOU!

i have worked for a long time in cc and have been thinking about a change also. unfortunately it would require me to change hospitals and start all over again (seniority etc) my pts. daughter told me that she had made the change from icu to l&d and absolutely loved it! she said that (in her facility) that the community and teamwork was wonderful. good luck!

Ugh!!! I am devastated! I FINALLY heard back from human resources about the L&D position I was "promised" by the manager... and come to find out- the manager has given this position to a PRN L&D RN- AFTER she already promised it to me!!!! :crying2:

Don't get me wrong, I am all about supporting your internal staff. But, it just kills me that the manager literally told me it was mine, and I just had to wait for HR to officially offer it to me. :angryfire

I did speak to the manager and questioned this... she apologized and said she had been out for a few days, and when returned, this PRN employee approached her about the ("MY") full time position. So she said she had to offer it to her because 1) she has the experience 2) she is already working on the unit and knows the routine. :banghead:

Now she says there is a nurse on medical leave who is not coming back, and she has already been to her director expressing that she would like me to have the position. She says to wait for the position to be legally available for her to offer, and it's mine. Do I trust this when I've already been burned once!?!?! :uhoh3:

WOW awful situation. I would be wary as to whether you can trust this latest possible position or not....seems the manager really did you wrong here. Seems to me, SHE could have called and told you of the change in situation, sooner. Not much wisdom here, but perhaps next time, get the offer in WRITING? Good luck and again so sorry.
