I so want to be a nurse.......but

Published

I have a degree in computer tech, and many years ago, I was told that the field would grow, grow, grow. Now, years later the tech jobs are flying out of the county, or being taken over by 20 year olds willing to work 70 to 80 hours a week. My problem, currently making $40,000, no more financial aid to receive, big mortgage, kid in college, yada yada yada. :o

My problem: I would like to be a nurse, but cannot find a program being offered during the evenings and on weekends in FL :o

I've searched every where that I could possibly search, but to no avail. I can't afford to quit job to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse, but I am sooo unhappy with my career choice. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Sheila,

Don't give up on your dream. Don't know about the programs in FL but perhaps you want to post your question in the Florida nursing discussion:

Good luck to you. I'm sure you'll get some answers!

I don't know if this will help at all, but one thing I've noticed is that there are lots of nursing homes, probably some hospitals too, that need part time / occassional computer people.

I wonder if you could work part time for some of these places that would probably allow you to work odd hours ( after all, they're open 24/7)......make a business out of it.....and go the nursing school during the day. Or consider it as an alternative career path.

I'm an RN but I manage my facility's network to the best of my ability because everyone else is afraid of it. Small nursing homes can't afford a full time computer geek, but are slowly being forced into computerizing. They might be interested in help on the side.

My son wanted to find help paying for his nursing degree. He was in the same field as you and was almost done with his degree in computer software engineering. He did not want to be in the same boat as you. He ended up getting his STNA certificate and was immediately employed by a hospital and after 6 months of employment they are paying for his nursing school. Might be an option. His wife is doing the same thing.

Daytona Beach Community College has an evening program for RN and LPN. You might check with other community colleges too. They don't always list the evening option in their catalogs.

Where in Florida? Info has it that Palm Beach Community College is beginning a part-time program beginning this semester.
