I went through a lot my first two years of college and I feel like they were basically a waste because at the end of them, I ended up with a low GPA of a 2.4. I really want to be a nurse and can't see myself in any other career but I know that my GPA is not going to allow me to get into a nursing school next year. I want to get my BSN but am okay with just getting an associates degree and then going into an RN to BSN program. Does anybody know how and if I can eventually get into a nursing program? I've been thinking about re-taking my prerequisites but my advisor told me that I shouldn't, since I passed the classes, although I didn't pass them with the best grades.

I would recommend that you retake your classes especially if your math and science grades are low. Most programs require that you have a 2.75 just to be considered for the program.

I would definitely retake those courses.

Do you have a 2.4 gpa in your pre-reqs or is it like your GE gpa? Because it depends on the school...some look at overall gpa while some look solely at your pre-req gpa. In addition, some schools take off points for repeating pre-reqs.
It's a 2.4 in my GE GPA. Do most schools take off for repeating pre-reqs?

I was in your situation too. My grades were pretty horrible from all the withdraw classes and so I went to another college to retake all science classes over and made sure my gpa was above 3.5
Some schools will look at the most recent grades you receive and disregard the older classes. My grades from second school actually brought up my GPA and I was able to apply for nursing schools. It really depends on what program you apply, I would suggest looking into finding the programs you want to apply and see what their requirements are as every school is a bit different. Good Luck!

The local community colleges in my area required a 2.5 or 2.75 GPA. If your cumulative is below that, you have to take at least 18 semester hours there meeting that miniumum GPA.
Why would it be looked DOWN upon to retake a prerequisite?! I can only see good coming from retaking a prerequisite (assuming you earned a high grade) as it would further cement the knowledge and show you are capable of learning the material.

18 hours wow, I have done that a few times and it almost killed me.
Really? I have done over 200 credit hours and I'm still quite alive. I can't imagine if the first 18 credit hours I took killed me!
I meant per semester. I read the original post wrong oops :) I have almost 200 as well and am still kicking strong.
haha good to hear!! i averaged 20 throughout undergrad (quarter school - 4 classes @ 5 hours each). last semester I took 5 classes (13 hours) at one school and one class (6 hours) at another school. Nothing like six classes, two schools, and 19 credit hours all at once. The only semester that was worse was when I took 21 quarter hours which consisted of biology for science majors, chemistry for science majors, anatomy for pre-med students, and calc II . I don't think nursing school could be worse than that but I'm keeping my fingers crossed because I have a feeling I'll be in for a rude awakening!

What's your science GPA?
Some schools accept the highest grade if you retake a course and some schools won't accept the highest grade and only accept the grade your first got in the class.
