I took the crne in ontario but got employed in saskatchewan

Published

Hi All

This is my first request for advise, I am an IEN, living in the caribbean.I did the CRNE in 2009 and was successful.I have tried to obtain employment in Ontario in order to apply for a work permit but so far without successd.

I applied to Saskatchewan and got accepted.I then called the licensing body in Ontario to ask if it was possible to be registered in Ontario(I am not registered in Ontario) then transfer to Saskacthewan and was told that i have to apply for an open permit. is this possible? since I read that open permit is given only to spouses, not the primary applicant.

I'm going to move this to the International forum since it's more related to immigration questions than specifically Canadian nursing concerns.

Did you obtain your authorization to write the CRNE from the College of Nurses of Ontario? You understand that your application was for registration and not simply for writing the exam don't you? Have you applied to the Saskatchewan Nurses' Association for registration? That should be your first step. They may require you to register in Ontario first, but they'll tell you that once they get your application. Without registration in Saskatchewan you cannot work as a nurse, with or without a work permit. Once you've gotten registration in Saskatchewan you can apply for your work permit. Saskatchewan may require an assessment of your education and work experience even though you've already passed the CRNE but it's unlikely that you'd have been given eligibility in Ontario only to have Saskatchewan turn you away. Good luck.

I think you are mixing up immigration and nursing permits. But most us wouldn't have a clue.

If you want to work in Saskatchewan and have a job there why are you bothered about registering in Ontario?

CRNE is valid across the country.

You don't need to apply for licensure in Ontario and then transfer just because you wrote in Ontario. The CRNE is a national exam. When you refer to the "open permit" are you referring to the work permit? That is completely separate from your nursing license and has nothing to do with the body that will issue you a nursing license.

Thank you all for responding

I obtained my authorization from ontario where I did my exam with the intention to register with ontario but I am unable to find employment there. In order to register with Ontario, I could either apply for PR or a work permit , this should then be photocopied and send to CNO along with the fee for assessment. then I could be registered. The open work permit was suggested by someone who answered the phone when I called CNO for information regarding the matter. She stated that because the job opportunity is in another province I would have to apply for a open work permit that would allow me to get registered in ontario and work in Saskatchewan.I don't know if it is possible to get a open work permit as the primary applicant

Did they indicate that you had to register with Ontario first or you could just register in Saskatchewan. You may not have to register in Ontario first. As far as the work permit is concerned you would have to contact Citizenship and Immigration Canada (cic.gc.ca) to get that answered.

Check cic as mentioned but usually you need employer and lmo for work permit and your spouse if you have one will get the open work permit. You as initial applicant are restricted to one employer as stated on work permit

After passing the CRNE, and having an open work permit. Does CNO allow you for registration, or you have to wait for your PR status?

Work permit should be enough but ask the college
