I think cutsey scrub tops look ridiculous on adult units

Nurses Uniform/Gear

Published

The other day a co-worker strolled in wearing a scrub top festooned with furry, smiling teddy bears. On an adult cardiac floor...REALLY? On various adult units I've seen Looney Tunes, Precious Moments, rainbows and clouds, hearts, and yes...oodles and oodles of teddy bears.

I think these types of scrub tops look ridiculous unless you work in peds, in which case they would all be highly appropriate. On one hand nurses are striving to be taken seriously as professionals, yet with the other hand they are taking juvenile looking scrub tops off the hangar.

I'm a guy and pretty much have to wear solid scrubs if I don't want to look like a freak. But I am not motivated out of jealousy to kvetch about print tops on the ladies. If women want to pizazz up their uniforms, I have seen tons of very tasteful, very professional looking print scrub tops coordinated with solid pants.

If I were director of nursing of the world, I would ban dorky print scrub tops.

Okay...talk amongst yourselves.

my hospital has just gone to all blue for all nurses, not support personal for the reasons mentioned by so many. I personally don't care either way, but I do like the fact that nurses are easy to identify now, and I'm not mistaken for anyone else.

This has become part of joint standards, I know... yuck... but we've tried badges, large badges... everything and settled on a color theme to identify the nursing staff. For those that love different scrubs, I feel for you because I think the color coded scrubs will be the new wave for nursing. Just food for thought. I feel for all those who have invested hundreds of dollars on personal uniforms and can't wear them now:uhoh3:

That's why you don't wear a suit. The point of her statement was that each profession has a certain look that they must maintain in order to have some professionalism. I don't see how you could misinterpret what she said to make it sound like you need to wear suits while wiping butt.

I don't know though, maybe some nurses don't view themselves as professionals. I don't think any lawyer would not think she was a professional, but some nurses seem to not believe they are professionals.

I believe I am a professional. But I don't feel that I have to dress to conform to the standards of another profession to remain a professional. Maybe my comfort in dressing LIKE A NURSE displays that I'm more sure of my professionalism than someone that thinks that a trivial thing like what jacket they wear is going to undermine them.

Attorneys don't say, "Well nurses are the most trusted profession, and I want to be trusted, so I'm going to choose a white skirt-suit and wear white hose and white shoes and a kicky white hat or maybe I'll wear a cheerful print jacket with this suit so that I'll get as much trust as nurses do." No, because they are confident in what they do for a living, they dress like other attorneys, in a prim and proper boring but expensive looking suit.

I'm a nurse, I wear scrubs. I don't feel the need to dress all in one color because of what other professions do. I realize my worth as a nurse, and dress like a nurse. And I pick the scrubs that look best on me. Not the ones that I imagine an attorney would wear if they were a nurse. Sometimes they're cutesy. My pediatric patients and their parents like cutesy. When I worked in a nursing home, my geriatric patients often found them cheerful. When working with middle-aged adults, more often I got asked about how comfortable my shoes were, but of all the complaints I may have heard from my patients, none of them seemed to be about my scrubs.

Did those sneakers help you out any? I see you've been wearing them about a year, so has it made a difference in anything? I want to try them too, but I'm concerned they're just another marketing gimmick toying with my emotions lol.

Aren't you worried that wearing sneakers to tone up your butt will make you look less professional? After all, attorneys don't choose their shoes so that they can get a workout while they're at work, they make sure to wear professional shoes.

It's not like he's wearing Winnie the Pooh, or Superman sneakers. No one is saying that nurses working the floor shouldn't be wearing practical clothing, they're saying that nurses working the floor should be dressed as adults.

This is already getting lost... the masses may miss it, but i love it!:yeah:

They make Winnie the Pooh and Superman sneakers in adult sizes? Sweet!

Forget cutesy scrubs--as a patient, I'd be very underwhelmed and suspicious the minute I saw my nurse wearing a pair of those Shape-Up shoes. It would suggest that he or she probably bought hook, line, and sinker into a massive marketing gimmick to "tone" at work. That would be somewhat unsettling to me, because my nurse with critical thinking skills should know better. If they just like wearing the ugly things, well, I guess that's their thing, but I'd suggest the Superman sneakers as an alternative.

I wouldn't care if my RN thought they were shaping their butt, or just found comfortable shoes to wear for 12 hour shifts.

Again, as long as they're dressed as an adult, I can take them seriously.

I agree with the OP - some of the prints are really unprofessional looking outside of a pedi unit. And I actually like that my place of employment has a dress code. Solid scrubs in certain colors for the RNs, aides, housekeepers, transporters, etc ...

I agree with the OP 100%. On adult patient units, nursing staff should not be wearing CareBears, Cartoon, Hearts, or other inappropriate (and unprofessional) scrubs. Adult nursing unit staff should wear solid color scrubs only.

About 18 months ago my facility enforced a new uniform system for the entire hospital. Different departments wear different colors (RN's - Navy Blue, CNA's - Hunter Green). It is a huge relief.

Cute childish scrubs look very unprofessional on nurses in general.

I am all for standardization of a solid color uniform for nurses!

Exactly. And on a related note, I would wonder just how seriously my nurse takes Evidence Based Practice if I observed them wearing shoes that claim to get rid of cellulite!! :lol2: strengthen every muscle in the body, etc by wearing shoes that basically force you to tighten your butt cheeks to balance yourself while wearing mini-rocking chairs on your feet. If you see your nurse falling for that, what's next? Those shoes with the wheels on the heel so are forced to tighten your glutes to avoid crashing into the tray cart?? Very suspect, I'd say. I think I'd rather wear Lady Gaga shoes to work.

Your sarcasm is sooo cute! I guess you're like, totally right! Shape ups are basically equivalent to Daffy Duck scrubs, right??? I know this is will be shocking--but I was planning on wearing to the gym, where, like I workout. I thought it might add something to my treadmill routine. I'll take this opportunity to make the cliche comment I'm sure you'd jump on if you were on the receiving end of your snarky comment: You know what assuming makes of a person, don't you?

Oh, and by the way, just because you made a sarcastic remark still doesn't make you right, and it doesn't make cartoon scrubs any less tacky, and it doesn't make them look any less "cheap" as one of the other posters mentioned. Nice try though!
