I have taken the NCLEX twice and failed, NEED HELP!

Published

So I have taken the test in late June and I failed in 75 questions. I did the Kaplan and got within the 60-65 range for the trainers and still failed. The second time I got a tutor, did Saunders, and the NCSBN 3 wk course, and even a counselor to help with test anxiety. This time I failed in 265 questions. Not only I but my tutor were most confident I would pass this time. I just need some guidance on how to approach it the next time. I have a job that my manager has done all her best efforts to make sure she could keep it for me. I am using up my chances and just feel defeated. Please, what should I do?! I'm open to try anything to help.

Thank you,

Sometimes it is how you take the test. Do NOT change your answers, do NOT read all into the question past what it is that they are asking you. Don't spend a whole lot of time saying to yourself WElllll, if this was this, then that would be that......just the question, and the answer.

Best wishes, and I can't stress enough doing practice tests of any kind you can over and over.

It sounds like you have the wind knocked completely out of your sails. Can you set up a study group a couple nights a week with some peers, or even on lunch break? Just hearing actual problem solving will help you to better understand processes. Good Luck! Stay positive!!!

My tutor said I was a perfectionist, I don't know how I can simplify what I am seeing. @ jadelpn Is there anyway I can do that?

And Beth4866 I am trying to start a study group with my roommates we all failed and were the top of our class. My roommates are brilliant and haven't taken the second test but we all have the same thought process.

Thank you guys so much for answering me. I am trying to stay positive. I will pass I just want to be a nurse so bad.

Given that attempt #2 went the full distance, I suspect that content knowledge is not the problem. The statement by your tutor that you're a perfectionist not only reinforces this, it also has me thinking it's your test-taking strategy that is causing you problems. I'd be absolutely shocked if your latest CPR indicates anything other than "near passing standard" in every category.

You have to remember that this exam is designed around the idea of determining if you're at least minimally competent to practice as a nurse. Don't overthink the questions. Yes, you do need to know lots of background information to answer the questions but you need to answer the questions presented with the answers provided. There may be some key words and phrases in the question that helps point you toward a specific answer or two answers.

You need to keep in mind the ABC's, Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, and the general scope of what Nurses can do without collaborating with another provider to provide care or obtain test results...

Thank you so much, so I basically need to rethink my thought process? I just do not know why my thought process switches during this specific test. I usually think inside the box but I guess I don't during this test.

Have you done mock exams?

For instance, start with the minimum; READ WHAT the question is ASKING; the CHOOSE what is the BEST answer. DO NOT change the answers.

Then add 50-60 questions until you go up to the maximum. Review the rationales, I would say on the ones you got wrong; find out what category you are missing on; try this after you get your report.

To add: start to understand the four concepts of becoming a competent, entry-level nurse:

1. Safe, effective care;

2.Health promotion;

3.Physiological Integrity;

4.Psychosocial integrity

Will determine WHAT the question is asking you; the question may be Respiratory related-but is it a Health Promotion or a Safety, or a Physiological or a Psychosocial one? Would you know the difference and choose the BEST answer?

Once one understands the concepts of NCLEX, they can answer the questions successfully.

I will definitely try that! Are there any programs I should look into to get the best questions?

Thank you guys for your help, I took the test for the last time and got 84 questions last week and passed. I knew all my content it came down to how I answered the questions. And by doing so I was able to finally get my license. Once again thank you guys so much, you're help was much needed.
