I start PC nursing program in 2 weeks, any advice?

Published

Hi everyone,

I start block one at phoenix college on the 15th, I am kind of nervous and having some anxiety about the whole thing, don't get me wrong I am very excited and have waited a long time for this. I have a friend in block two at Grand Canyon and hear how incredibly hard it is all the time, she is studying 24 -7. She doesnt work and lives at home. I on the other hand am a single mom with a mortgage payment and a part time job. I could use any advise on how to keep it all together. Thanks, Jenn:uhoh21:

:behindpc: PC Nursing is easy. Boring, but easy.

So as long as you know the basics of computers you shouldn't have many problems.

What?????

I haven't started NS yet, my application is in but I haven't got a date yet, but I thought I'd give you some encouragement anyway. From what I've experienced in going to school and raising 6 kids basically on my own (dh works 80 hours a week) is you just have to be really organized in budgeting your time. I'm sure you've figured it out during pre-req's that you study every day and get a system for yourself so that you never fall behind. If you made it through the pre-req's I'm sure you'll do great in NS. Congratulations on starting.

Thanks for the encouragment, I know it will be hard but it will all be worth it in the end. I really am so excited to be using my brain again and learning new things, but I also know that it at times may be overwhelming, just got to hang in there, right? anyway thanks again. Where did you apply, and when?:)

I applied in June to Mesa, Chandler-Gilbert, Scottsdale, Gateway and I forget where else. I'm actually going to change my first request to Glendale even though I live in Gilbert. Some of the board members here go to the part-time program there and it's only on Fri Sat which works great for me. With 6 kids it's really hard to be flexible with day-care and with driving them to school. I figure if I know for SURE that I just need day-care Fri and SAt, then that'll be easier than changing every month and trying to juggle it. It's worth the drive for me.

You just have to focus on that brass ring at the end, and don't lose sight of it.

Good for you, that sounds like it will work out well. It took about four months after I applied to get accepted into PC, It is about 15 miles from my home I actually live rght across the street from Paradise Valley comm College, wanted to go there, but can't be too picky, I was ready to go where ever would have me, Block one is only three days a week Mon. 11:30 -2:30, wed and thursday 7-3, trying to coordinate my first grade son's schedule will be a challenge, but we will sort it out. We have to we have made it this far!!

I have a daughter in first grade so I know how the coordinating goes. Luckily there are a couple of day care centers that drop off and pick up at her school, or my husband is going to try and rearrange his work schedule to have Fridays and Sat's off. I also have a son in pre-K, he goes MWF so I'll have to juggle him on Fridays as well. Next year my baby should be starting preschool and that's only Tues and Thurs, so no interference in her schedule. That's what I like so much about Fri Sat school. I also have two teenagers in high school, I have to drive one of them to school, but I'm hoping she'll have her license by November and be able to drive herself. That'll help me a lot. Where there's a will there's a way.

When did you apply for NS and when did you find out you were accepted? I have a friend that applied in March and hasn't heard anything yet. I know Fall is full, it was before she applied in March but you'd think she'd have heard something by now.

I applied in Oct, already new that Jan was full, If I remember correctly they dont start doing the "runs" on the applications until the next semester begins, so after January started they began the lottery again, They do it every Tuesday. I found out late January that I got in. I hope this makes sense. I think that when you check your application on line that there might be a phone number that you can call to see if and when they start processing applications, or call your nursing advisor where you took your prereq's. Hopefully after August semester starts you should know fairly soon. Make sure that the schools you applied for start in January, so tht you don't get passed by for that semester, change order of preference if need be. I'm sure you'll hear something soon!!!! Jennette

I am in block one at southwest skill ctr (estrella mountain cc in avondale) and I'm finding it to be time consuming, but also not as hard as I thought. I thought it would be almost impossible (i also have two young kids at home) but I study a lot and am making high grades. I do wish I would have taken Patho before, but taking it in block one is not hard. My instructor is wonderful, so that helps!

Try not to have too much anxiety. If you've taken your pre-reqs, block one shouldn't be too hard, at least that's what I'm experiencing. Since I'm at the skill ctr, they let people do block 1 and 2 w/o having had pre-reqs, and those are the people who are having a harder time. Doable, but harder.

Just try and organize yourself, especially since you have a child. I find that trying to study when my kids are awake, is pretty hard. I don't get much done. I put them to bed early and stay up late studying. I worry about getting a full nights sleep on the weekend. Good luck!

I am in Block 1 and still adjusting to the madness, but I am a newbie. :lol2:

I am totally and utterly convinced that if you have children you have what it takes to make it through NS. It is a challenge, even for those of us child free, but Moms can take anything.;)

I have so much respect for you guys with kids!!

I will add that it is very difficult, but mostly it is the stress/anxiety that seems overwhelming right now for me, not the book work. You will do fine, try to stay calm for now....:wink2:

Organization is what will get us all through NS. We have juggled schedules to do the pre-reqs and co-reqs, we can do this!

I have heard the range of responses from it's easy to it's all-consuming. I have also heard that from people in my A&P class. It all boils down to if you are organized.

Gotta keep a balance....time with family and getting sufficient study time in.
