I can't stand my new job at ALL. Thinking about quitting

I had one week of hospital orientation and then it was time to work on my floor. Guess what....I had 7 days of orientation on my floor. A total of 2 weeks since I work 12 hour shifts....and now I'm on my own. Not only am I on my own, but I feel like my assignments are toally unfair. This is a sweat shop. I found out today that a week before I started, they had a nurse work with them for 3 days before she quit.

I am supposed to get out at 730 at night. I'm lucky to get out by 9pm. Typically it is 930. Not totally my fault....one nurse in particular wants an hour report from me.

Admissions? Well, I have yet to do one yet. But when I get an admission, I will be on my own. doesn't matter what time the admission comes, even if it is 3 minutes before our shift is over...we have to do it, not the next shift (and vice versa). Another thing I don't like....this hosptial is all computerazied charting, but there isn't any way to print off the med list for our patients. yup, we have to write them out and then bring that list to the Pyxis with us. Very time consuming.

And I can't stand the pallative care nurse. she is VERY nasty to me. I won't go into detail, other than she is a nast, nasty lady.

My shoes were stolen from the locker room. My manager had an attitude of Oh well....like she does everything.

So I have been at this hospital for a month - including the 1 week of hospital orientation.

I sooooo want to quit. Should I?

There are too many places in need of good nurses to let yourself be run into the ground in a complete hell hole.

I would start applying elsewhere.

Find a job first, then give your notice. Insist on an exit interview....let them know why you are leaving. Sometimes HR hasn't got a clue, sometimes they don't care. Either way your experience will be noted.

:eek: Holy cow! I do not want to believe this is true (although unfortunately I'm sure it is)! This sounds like a HORRIBLE working situation, and if I were you I would go RUNNING! I would even hesitate to put in my 2 weeks notice because of the working situation (although I probably would just to be professional). It sounds like a really DANGEROUS situation for both you and your patients, and sounds like a situation that could quickly turn extremely bad and one where your license could be in danger. Not to mention the personality/stealing issues. Yikes! Good luck with whatever decision you make!

It sounds like you already have your mind made up..... I would quit. Since you are out of orientation you should give 2 weeks notice. YOU count in the numbers. But, if you were you could of quit without notice.. Why would they want to continue to train a nurse that was leaving? Is it possible to switch to another unit??? It would be a much smoother transition if this were possible.. Well good luck and take care.

Bad way to start out. Find a new job, you probably don't even need to tell them about this one if you don't want to, then give 2 weeks notice and leave. If you don't you will regret it and have terrible thoughts about nursing. Good luck.

With all of the different medications, routes, dosages times however many patients you have... my goodness. And I thought chart checks on MARs was time consuming!

If you have other options, run like the wind. I started my job about the same time as you, and I'm still in orientation (& should be for another month or so -- 12 weeks total). Complete opposite experience.

i would see if you were able to switch to a diffrent unit....did you get a sign on bonus that you might need to repay?? it would be easier to stay with in the hospital system which im sure is not as horrible as the floor you got stuck on!
