I resigned today...

I'm not a nurse, my user name is 'justavolunteer'. Unfortunately, now I'm 'nolongeravolunteer'. The hospital I was at decided all the supplies had to be locked up. The big problem is that I don't have access to them because the head nurse said I'm 'justavolunteer'. A big part of my job was to hand out supplies (cups, straws, etc.) to patients. Not having access to them made my job immensely more difficult. I even put my concern about it in writing. The head nurse refused to discuss it or even respond to it. The volunteer coordinator couldn't get her to budge either! Today I went to the hospital, said good-bye to the nurses, and resigned. The nurses were not happy at all about this because they were always so thankful for my help. They did say they understood my reasons, though. Now, when the nurses go to get gloves from an empty dispenser or try to put needles in a full needle box, they can remember that I'm no longer there to take care of these things (and thank their glorious supervisor, no doubt).

I will start the search to find a spot at another hospital. I suspect there is a need for me somewhere.

Thank you all for your kind comments & encouragement.

For all the questions people asked: No, the hospital wasn't trying to change my role. This started because JCAHO decided that saline, IV flush vials, etc., are 'medication' and must be locked up. I asked if it would be possible to separate these things from the stuff I need. I think the management was simply upset because I dared to question them at all.

All my paying jobs have been outside of health care. I have had managers get mad simply because I ask questions. Other times I get a line like, "Well, I can't let you do whatever or give you whatever, because then I'll have everyone in my office wanting something". Stupid, stupid, stupid, but also typical of management thinking.

I have never considered switching to a medical job because the one I have pays well. I just like to volunteer. It is personally satisfying to do it and know that I am appreciated.

I often say in response to a patient's question, "I'm just a volunteer, I have to pass this on to your nurse", or something similar. It is one thing to say it like that. It is a whole different story when management "geniuses" decide that they don't need to respond to volunteers.

I am so sorry to hear that you were treated like that. Volunteers are important and you should go somewhere where you are appreciated.

The head nurse was a jerk. Her loss. Wasn't it possible to be re-assigned to another unit before doing the ultimate thing of quitting?

Try volunteering in a nursing home. You'll probably have to work with the activities department rather than nursing, but you'll get to see another site of how nurses do their jobs.

FINALLY! I found another hospital where I can volunteer! It's a little further away, but I'll be glad to get started again. I didn't realize how much I would miss it until I was not actually active.

I guess I'll be doing about the same things I was doing in my last spot (filling water pitchers, transporting pts., etc.).

Because of the problems at my previous job, I asked about the supply situation when I was interviewed by the head nurse here. They keep the meds separate from the rest of the supplies, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Hey Just

Thanx for the update. Your willingness to seek and find a place to simply do good is kinda inspiring. I hope this new place understands what a precious quality you embody.

Hey, come on down to Alabama and I'll PAY you for your services!! Just out of curiosity, why do you volunteer and not try to get certified as a CNA and get paid for your work? Don't get me wrong, I think you are an incredible person or else you wouldn't be volunteering your time...

Hey that is sooooo exactly what I was thinking!!! :roll
