I quit smoking and need advice

Published

I am smoking my last cigarette today. The hardest phase for me will be the psychological aspect. I have a plan in place, but need back up suggestions for getting through the endless stream of thoughts regarding wanting to light up another one. :stone I have categorized myself as a stress and social smoker. I am not in a "happy" place right now :angryfire

Any advice from people who have been there?

I appreciate any and all input!!

Thanks!

You might also try "smoking" a cinnamon stick. Yikes! Don't light it! They're about the same size as a cigarette, and you get the psychological satisfaction of hand-to-mouth and inhaling.

Thanks to everyone here - you're a great bunch of people!!!

Needless to say, I have not felt like doing much of anything lately, felt kind of depressed, and just plain ole "blah". I'm coming out of it though.

It's been 4 days.....4 very difficult days - I wish I could have a partial lobotomy to get rid of "those" thoughts. BUT, I have been following everyone's advice, joined the websites and I'll be okay. I plan on starting to work out more & I'm sure that'll help me get out of the funk. I wish I could use the patch or Zyban or the gum, but for certain reasons I can't.

I'm keeping in mind 2 very important reasons as to why I quit. The first is I found out that I am expecting (so I will not and cannot have a relapse) and the second I have to give as much priority as the first - and that is for myself. If I make the pregnancy the only reason - I know I will start as soon as it over.

So.....it has been interesting!

Thanks again everyone - you're all terrific!!

Medic2RN? How's it going? I just wanted to tell you that I decided to join you on the wagon. My son graduated from HS Saturday, and I decided to quit as a gift to him. I got the patch. I smoked an old butt I found Saturday at 2pm, blech! and nothing since!! I even ride to work with a smoking buddy, and it didn't even bother me. The worst time for me is when I first get up. That's when my brain is saying "ummmm, shouldn't you be heading out to the garage about now?" Otherwise, it hasn't been nearly as hard as I expected.

I started smoking at 14, and quit (on a dare!) 20 years ago at the age of 27. I remember that it was very difficult, but I had three very compelling reasons to quit. First, I was bigger than that little cigarette, and I made up my mind that I wasn't going to be a slave to it. Second, at that time, quitting was the "cool" thing to do (funny...that's why I started smoking!). And third, well, it WAS a dare, after all! But I did quit. I guess the trick (if there is such a thing) is to determine what motivates you. Reasons for quitting (or not quitting) are as varied as the individuals making that decision, and what worked for me may not be appropriate for anyone else. I stopped doing a lot of things I did while smoking, and started hanging out in places where smoking wasn't allowed. But even today, 20 years after my last cigarette, every once in a while I think I'd like to have just one more. So I inhale, hold it, and exhale through my mouth, just as if I were smoking. That generally satisfies the urge. And although I understand and appreciate the desire to smoke, I congratulate all of you who made the decision to quit. Quitting has made a world of difference in my life.

I smoked for 8 years, 2and a half packs a day. I used the smoke away pills that you see on tv, only I got them at walgreens. There is no easy way to get through the cravings you just have to be strong, but the pills helped a little. I also quit going to bars and became designated driver to my friends.
