I was a ______ prior to being a nurse/student nurse

Published

I have seen TONS of people who have said "nursing is my second, third or fourth career." As I have become more and more curious I was wanting to start a thread to see what areas and walks of life all the nurses and student nurses had before embarking on this incredible medical journey.

I will go first.

I was a TRUCK DRIVER prior to being a nursing student..

NEXT.

I am excited to see what you all did in your PAST LIVES>>>>>

What a great subject. Lets see. I went to nurisng school right after highschool grad. Went to the big UK university in Ky. Flunked out. Was told to find another profession. Went to a hospital diploma program for 2 of 3 years. Flunked Microbioloby( a 9 am sat morn. class). Was told to find another job.

Entered retail and was at a local large dept store for almost 4 years. Left and was asst manager at a K-Mart. Got passed over for a promotion. Quit. Stayed home about 6 mo and played housewife. Boring-----. Husband challenged me to go back to school . Went to the local state vocational school and became a cosmetologist (hairdresser). Worked for 7 years as a hairdresser. IRS called me on taxes for tip money and wanted 1700 dollars. I told them if i made that much money i would be driving a corvette not a chevette. told them they probably made my decission for me to change professions

Went back to school same vocational school and became an LPN. Workers at the school took bets that i would be back to get my chef degree. Ha Ha. Not yet. I worked in a local hospital for 5 years as an LPN and was told that I would not be getting much higher pay unless I got my RN. Went back to school at the local university and went on weekends and nights. Graduated in one year. Here I am 25 years later and considering my masters for teaching and I am not a young chick. I have 2 grown sons and a 60 yr old husband who i consider my 3rd kid.

My how life does have its pitches and curves.

hope everyone else does it easier than I, but all my past makes me even a better nurse. I can relate to almost any patient with any background.

Specializes in NICU-Level III.

I was a bookstore manager, then jailer and police/fire/ambulance dispatcher before I became a nurse.

I graduated from high school in may and started nursing school that August (1979)!

Specializes in Cardiac, home care, management.

Bill collector and finance manager.

Specializes in Ped's ER.

I was an office manager for several years after graduating college with a BA in Sociology. Then I was a Firefighter/EMT for 8 years, before deciding to go back and get my RN. Graduated a year ago, now working in an ER.

I'm currently a nursing student but I've been working as a full-time now part-time medical assistant for the past 7 years..;)

What a fun thread!

Let's see, I was a...

deli clerk

reservations clerk at a company where they booked hotels and condos

bank teller

consumer loan clerk

mortgage loan clerk

accounting clerk

bank teller (again)

hotel sales

worked for temporary agency

nursing school!

Always wanted to be a nurse and finally when I had the opportunity I jumped in! Currently work in LTC but wish I would have gotten my med/surg experience first. In fact I think about that every day...I guess I'm not finished adding to my resume!:uhoh21:

lifeguard

medical transcriptionist

graduate from a BSN program in 08 and still do transcription while I'm in school

Hmmm, I've been a grocery bagger, a teller, a loan officer, a secretary/receptionist, a military wife (followed him to Germany for awhile), an assistant teacher, a checker, and a pricing manager (in that order). Most of time I was also a full time student. Sheesh...I've been in school a long time.

What a fun thread!

I was a dreamer.....dreaming of that awesome career that would make my dreams come true....so after i realized i was scared of heights and becoming a flight attendant was out the window.I said I love ppl and talk quite often...probably would look kinda cute in all white...lol...NURSING....was the career to chase for.Of course while I was waiting to realize this....I was an correctional officer...customer service call center agent...and currently a house wife with a desire to break free from my home. Will be a pre nursing student spring 2008////ROOT! ROOT! ROOT! FOR ME!

I was a teacher - Kindergarten through univeristy level. I loved it, but was burned out.

This is my 3rd "career" not counting mom. I worked for Clinique Cosmetics as a coordinator/trainer for about 8 years. I was a Court Stenographer for 9 years and I graduate with my BSN in 9 days!!!!!!
