I am a newbee and need advice!

Published

So I am one step closer to my dream by becoming a nurse, but first I need accepted into the nursing program. One of the requirements in the application process is to write a personal composition of 150-250 words addressing your view on nursing, professional goals, and why you wish to pursue a BSN degree. Writing the paper isn't what I'm flustered by. I need advice on the set up of the paper. If someone could give me a sample of how it should be set up that would be awesome!

I don't know what font to use

the size of the font

if there should be a heading; if so what should the heading consist of

if there needs to be a title,

the margins,

the spacing of the essay,

if I should stay away from using pronouns; such as I, me, you, we, our, etc.,

should there be more than one paragraph; like an intro, body, and conclusion,

what it should consist of,

should I use only 150-250 words or go over; and if I go over is that looked down on?

Should I put a header, or title page?

Should I get sources from somewhere else like a book or e-net or should I strickly stick to my own knowledge (remember it's an essay about me and why I want to become a nurse)

PLEASE HELP!

You'll probably get more responses if you post this in the student RN thread. Good luck.

You need to familiarize yourself with APA writing. There are several good sites on APA style. Here are a couple that are invaluable:

This isn't some special writing.Just use the standards like font times new roman, size font 12, and double space. I think it is best to stay within the word limit, don't go below or above- it's a safety rule I've learned from my previous college English professors. If you do go over, just go over by a little bit but not a lot. If 250 is max, you could go over by 270 (?) try to use concise words and get to the point. stay away from redundant words. I think you could use I (1st person) because the prompt is asking you for your point of view, your goals, and your decision/ reasoning on why You want to get a nursing degree. I don't see anything wrong with using I. That isn't a lot of word count to work with, so one big paragraph answering all the questions will be enough. This isn't an English essay or paper for that matter. you could start out with a one sentence intro about your view on nursing and goal. Treat the first sentence almost like a topic sentence if you want to.

If you were given no parameters, then you can't go wrong with Times New Roman font, font size 12 with double spacing and 1inch margins.
