I need some major advice!

Published

I'm from Connecticut and I hope to eventually be a RN. I ended up going to school for 3 years for Graphic Design and realized I did NOT want to go into that. I always wanted to work with people and help them, and now that I'm re-evaluating things, I would love to be a RN.

I don't know much about the process. First off, I don't know much about the abbreviations either. I know what LPN and RN is, but that's about it! I looked for a guide on here, but I'm not that great at navigating this site yet.

Right now, what do I need to do? I want to go to Gateway Community College for their nursing program. I requested info, but I would love to know the steps for this. Do I need to take a test to get in? Is there going to be a long wait period? How long until I'm actually a RN?

Please let me know ANY basic knowledge you can, I know almost nothing... but I truly know this is something I want to do.

First of all, Welcome!

You are asking the same questions many of us have had in the past. I would suggest that you pour through these boards, especially this forum, and dig into the posts about LPN vs RN school and some of the other school-entry related topics.

A lot of the folks on here now and knee deep into finals and such so you may find more info more quickly by searching.

Good luck!

Okay so I did some research on the school you listed, I don't go to the school but this is how it goes.

1. First you have to do Pre-Reqs, these are classes you have to take before being accepted into the nursing program. The classes that need to be taken are:

English Comp (which I'm sure you've probably already taken)

High School Chem or a college General chem class

Anatomy and Physiology I & II

SAT Math of 550 or a College level math class

Passing score on computer test or Intro to computer college course (again I'm sure you have that based on your original major).

Now you can take the pre-reqs that you don't have at any community college or you can take them at that community college but you would not be able to register as a nursing major just yet. You could be a general arts major.

2. Apply for admission using the www.commnet.edu/nursing. You list the school you are trying to apply to. I think all five schools have the same admission standards. Submit college transcripts and high school transcript if using HS chem class. These colleges only accept for the Fall so this would be for Fall 2011 acceptance. Application must be submitted by Feb 1st

3. Take the Teas exam and score at least a 65% on the exam. Must be taken and have scores before Feb 1st.

4. Wait to find out if you're accepted.

Depending on how many or if you need any of the pre-reqs listed and if you get accepted the first time around will determine how long the program takes. Seeing as the only thing you might not have is the A&P I and II and chem, you need to have those finished by December and then apply for Fall 2011, if you're accepted on your first try, then you take nursing courses for two years would graduate May 2013 with your Associate's in Nursing and you will be eligible to take the RN license exam.

Here's all the info you need http://www.gwcc.commnet.edu/uploadedFiles/Academics/Nursing/2011-2012%20Nursing%20Informational%20Packet.pdf

Hope it helps and good luck =)
