I Need help with Medical Math...

Published

hello there. i'm not an lpn as of yet, but i will be in 2008 permitting if i pass the test. i'm not really good in math and i have disliked it all my life. as you know, nurses need a lot of math in order to do doseage calculations, ht. and wt., surface area, drug doseages for peds, monitoring iv, giving im, sq, or id injection etc...i hope math won't be my downfall as a nurse because i really love nursing! does anybody have any suggestions about an easier way to do mental math for drug calculations??? any help will be appreciated. thank you so much. :):):)

You're welcome, missy120808.Thanks for the good luck in school. I really appreciate it. I'll need all the luck I can get. I wish you good luck too in your online college classes. How are they going, by the way? What classes are you taking? I have my Practical Nursing class tomorrow in school. It's all day long and that makes me a very happy camper. I'll make sure to keep you posted! I wish you all the best. :) Go nursing:nurse:!!

Right now I am taking the Science of Nutrition and The Health Human Administrator-part of my major!!! And I finish both of these classes in two weeks and then I will take World Literature- an elective class and Health and Human Services in the United States-part of my major too!!! And hopefully in February I will be taking Biology 101-Elementary Human Anatomy and Physiology, this is a class that I need to complete before I can take the second semester of the LVN program. I know that I do not start until Fall 2008 or Fall 2009 but this along with my online classes will help to keep me busy until I start NURSING SCHOOL!!! I called my academic counselor the other day and she told me that I do not have to wait until I graduate to apply for jobs, plus she also told me that I could go to my schools resource center and they would help me put together a resume. So I am going to look online and call hospitals and other medical offices and see what happens. I hope that I can get a job soon so that I can save for NURSING SCHOOL!!! and help to save for a house!!! Sorry about the long post!!! oops forgot-my classes are going great!!! The class you are taking sounds great, I wish I was taking that class, I wish luck in class tomorrow, keep me posted ok!!!

Hello there. It's okay for the long post. Well, your Science of Nutrition and your Health Human Administrator classes sound interesting. I wish you good luck. Although, I must say, I'm not too fond of the World Lit. As for A& P, I'm taking that class. OF COURSE it's not college level, but it's a little difficult. Our class is on the integumentary system. As for what your counselor said, I'm confused. You don't have to wait until you graduate to get a job? But Are you a CNA??? How is it possible to work? So I have a question for you: what exactly is the Health Human Administrator class?

by the way, Missy120808. I forgot to tell you. As a CNA, you can work for a hospital and they might pay for your way through Nursing School. All you have to do it work for them for a set number of yrs and then they will finance your way to NS. I don't really know if it's like that in California. But I live in Miami and if I decide to work as a CNA for Baptist Hospital and I sign a contract saying that I will work for them for 2 yrs, then they will pay for my college. Cool, huh? But, Like I said, you have to check with the Hospitals in your area.

No I am not a CNA, the human adminstrator class basically teaches me the roles of administrators in hospitals and medical offices. My counselor told me that I could work in the admissions department of a hospital or in a mecdical doing paper work. She told me that I could apply in hospitals and medical offices and ask if they require my degree first or not because unfortunately at my school there are no interships or job placements so I am totally on my own which sucks!!! I appreciate yuor suggestion if I cannot find a job in a hospital or medical office I think I might become a CNA and try to pay for nursing school that way, thanks. I hope your class is going good, keep me posted ok!!!

Hello there. How are you? I hope you're doing fine. Well, you say that you're not a CNA? I'm sorry to hear that. I wish you luck in finding a job as a office administrator in a hospital. I don't really know if they require a degree. I don't believe so. Yes, working as CNA (once you become one) is an excellent way to pay for your way through Nursing School. First off, it will offer you an opportunity to get expierence while you are in Nursing School. That they are you able to apply what you learn in school to the job. Being an admintistor will give you an idea of documentation and will provide you with expierence as well. However, I don't know if the hospital will pay for your nursing school if you are an office administrator; you have to work and pay for it yourself. But it would be nice if the hospital can pay it for you. I think in order to do that, you need to be a CNA. By the way, class is gong great. I have A& P tomorrow. On Friday of this week, I have my very first clinical as an LPN in training. This time around, we will be alone. There are no "buddies" this time. It's a little scary and exciting. I'll let you know how it goes. take care

you're welcome. And I am doing fine. thnak you for asking. Thank you for the support and goods luck. I just wanted to sum up how my clinicals went. Well first off it was at a nursing home. We did orientation 1st (mind you, my class went there last yr). Then our teacher told us to pick our residents. We did as we were told and then took a look at pt records. It was interesting seeing the meds they take and what allergies they have. My resident has 25 meds! 25 meds I have to learn. That is a lot, but I know I can do it. We actualy have to write them down on drug cards. It wasn't too bad for my first day. I was nervous about nothing. Can u believe that? So now, I'm so excited and I can't wait to go there next class! I know you will do fine too in clinicals once you get there. Good luck in your elementary A& P class and your Biology 101 when you take it.

Thank you so much and I am so glad to here how well you did in your clinicals this week!!! That is so great that you are not nervous at all, I cannot wait until I start my clinicals, still have a bit of a wait!!! And thank you for your support, I really and truly appreciate it you are so nice and kind. And I wish you the best and good luck in your clinicals and all of your classes. Keep me posted ok!!!

thank you so mcuh. Well, It's not the fact that I wasn't nervous, it's just that I knew what to expect. Therefore, it calmed me down a bit. I went to clinicals today. It was awsome!!! I got to feed my resident breakfast and then I did my head-toe assessment which consists of check's the pt's neurological status, check the pupils for proper constrictions, listening to heart and lungs sounds, listening for bowel sound, checking for cirulation by doing capilly refill (a technique to which you squeeze a person's finger for 30 seconds and then release; upon immediate release, the finger should turn red, indicating adequate blood flow) and check for the skin color. All in all, I had fun; although I meesed up doing for assessment for the heart sounds. I think I miscounted. Wow, this is getting long. sorry about that. So how was your day? How was school? keep me posted please. :):):):nurse:
