I had my OR day this week and I got to see a bilateral club foot reconstruction. It was on a very young child and it was so cool! SInce it was the same thing on both feet the CRNA student and her instructor asked me to come to thier end of things and watch thier stuff for the 2nd part of the surgery. During the surgery I got to stand right between the surgeons and watch and it was so cool! I saw the scrub and circulating nurses duties and I saw what the surgeons do and even about 2 hours of what the CRNA's do!! I was so thrilled! I totally want to to OR and someday get my BA so I can go to school to be a CRNA. It was so facinating and neat and I loved it! I ahve been in telemerty for my 1st semester of nursing cliniclas and I really don't like it at all. But OR

I'm so jealous. The hospital where I have done all of my placements has a rule that only 4th year nursing students are allowed into the OR. In 4th year we have only a very short hospital placement, so I don't know if I'll get a chance to go. I so very desperately want to!!!!!! I got to spend a day in the angio lab and thought it was great, though.........

Glad you liked it! Someone had too...lol.

I didn't like my OR rotation at all. There's no communication with the patient, no patient care...not my cup of tea.

Yeah, I like interacting with pt but I LOVE doing all the technical stuff more. I would love to go to med school and be a surgeon(sp) but I am 32 now and have 2 young kids and we do not live real close to a med school. Right now that is not an option. I will do the CRNA thing though. That was so cool!

we did OR our 2nd semester. i saw some hemorrhoidectomies (oh...fun) and lap choley's. all in 1 day. my next OR day was snowed out.

i really didnt like it at all! like the above poster said...the lack of patient communication turned me off. i dunno, the nursing skills just didnt seem as broad as i'd like.

to each their own-glad you liked it!!! its always fun to find an area you love

I liked it when I did my rotation in the OR it was neat but not where I want to be. I want more interaction with pt. I really want to be a NICU nurse. Well Good Luck with your studies and where ever you decide to go.

I loved the few times I spent in the OR. From a simple lap chole to a mitral valve replacement, everything I saw absolutely fascinated me. Do I want to do OR nursing after graduation? Well I wouldn't count it out, but it's not my primary interest. :)

That's great that you liked it so much!! I really enjoyed my OR rotations too. First semester I had a full day in OR and second semester I had a full day in Same Day Surgery. I really enjoyed it too. I did miss the patient interaction though too. I love the technical stuff .... hope to do my preceptorship next semester in the NICU, lots of technical stuff along with patient/family interaction.

It's great to find something you like!!

I LOVED my O.R. rotation too. :balloons: I was gushing about it for days. That's definitely where I want to work! No one else in my class seemed to like it though...I saw a radical mastectomy, and two cholecystectomies. The surgeon removed the last patient's gallbladder (full of huge stones) and then let me cut it open for fun. I think maybe the circ nurse thought it was kinda sick and she kept telling him "Oh, don't make her do that," but I was already hunting for some gloves and scissors! I guess the lab didn't care...

ETA: I kinda like the fact that they're drugged up and asleep by the time you see them. Is that bad?

I hope you get the preceptorship you want. I'm getting OB which is what I want to do when I graduate.

I don't think you are bad for liking it when the pts are drugged up by the time you see them. I love the nursing feild and I love to make people well, but personally, I am more in tuned to the actual sugery stuff and technical side of things and not the whole interaction thing. Some people are more into the caring and interacting end. We are all different and that is why there are so many different fields. Choose the nursing feild that best suits YOU and you will do the pt the best sevice possible. :)
