I Love Night Shift

Nurses General Nursing

This is just a post related to the absolute gazillions of negative commentary about night shift.

1. Teamwork, less backstabbing and sarcasm

2. Shift differential

3. Meals and showers are generally already done

4. The 3am giggles

5. Never need a sitter (elementary kids + older)

6. The traffic is nonexistent

7. Superheroes work at night (Batman, Green Arrow, Daredevil, Dark Angel)

8. Putting small gifts at pt bedsides Christmas Eve/Halloween for those who celebrate and then get to go home and spend morning with family

9. Sleeping out in a hammock (under a shady tree!) to get Vitamin D

10. Sending family to work/school and having house to myself

11. Night shift is full of really crazy or crazy sick pts. Either way, it's a good time.

You can disagree with me or do your night shifts/sleeping differently, and that's great. I love night shift. I'm hooked.

I have to say I actually really enjoy Night shift for all of these reasons.

My only complaint is on off days I feel kind of 9ff come 3-6 am because not a soul I really know is awake and it's kinda lonely LOL!

And yes traffic is actually bad for me but it'd be the same if I worked day shift!

I also get more time with my patients at night (hello less to no procedures.... )

You guys are getting me EXCITED!!!! I worked 12s on nights for a while and LOVED it. Then the company went to 8s and I couldn't deal with 5 nights per week so I switched to days. I now believe I have found the perfect combination! I still have to work 8s but because it's PT I only work one week 3 days then the next week 2 days. I can pick up extra whenever I like but am required to work 20 hours per week minimum.

So happy! No more teachers, no more books, no more MD's dirty LOOKS! :roflmao:

Regarding no one to talk to at 3 am - you need to make friends with musicians. My friends were always stopping by after gigs or meeting at the all night diner at 2:30 in the morning.

I also find grocery shopping or Walmart at 1 am to be entertaining. All the "characters" are out!

(Yes, I realize what that says about me)

Hahaha!!! I definitely do need to make friends with some musicians like you and can you believe that the nearest walmart to me closes at like 1AM? WHO DECIDED THAT WAS A GOOD IDEA!!!! lol

But people watching at 3am... I totally dig this idea.

I started nights in nursing school, and somehow just kinda got stuck in it... well I guess I just didn't turn them down since I was already used to it... now I love it. Especially as a newer nurse (only 1.5 years), I get to learn a lot, because it's not as busy, but a lot of crazy ish happens at night.... let's talk about PRN's to get people to sleep lol....

I wasn't getting any traffic up until a month ago :( I'm almost at a hour and a half commute each way! The mornings are killing me, I'm about to fall asleep driving home, and no I can't nap, because my dog has already been locked up in her room for 15 hours and she needs to go out and pee :( ... the only downfall... can't wait for the holidays when kids are out of school and there's no traffic lol....
