I Love my instructor, but she is a big PROBLEM

So, last night was my first lecture for the second semester. I'm currently in OB. Anyway, my instructor is very nice, sweet, bubbly, animated, and I think she is a wonderful person. She really seems like she loves to teach and she seems to have alot of knowledge in OB. So whats the problem ? She TALKS WAY TOO MUCH ABOUT NOTHING ! :angryfire

Seriously ! We only have class for 3 hours and she'll take up 1.5 hours telling stories, jokes, and getting off topic. For every bullet in the powerpoint " she had a story" I like when instructors tell real life stories, but she had a story for everything, it came to the point where we had a half hour of class left and she was still on page 5 of a 20 page powerpoint. So what did she do ? She rushed through the powerpoint and told us " we can read the rest". Yes I can read the rest, but she was supposed to elaborate on each topic ! This lady is very funny: When she was describing something lady partslly she would sit on the desk and fling her legs wide open ! ( its extra funny because she's short and plus sized):lol2: She was also talking about ways pregnant women put themselves at risk she says" Some Pregnant women my take OTC drugs, drink alcohol, be at a party smoking Marijuana with Michael Phelps..." after that the class just broke out laughing. I personally think she should be a stand up comedian but just not during our LECTURE !

Then to top things off, her cell phone rings, its very loud. She answers it in front of the class ! Her son was calling her just to ask her if he had to leave the top off on his casserole. Where is the professionalism here ! Then we were reviewing handwashing, she told us to wash for 15 seconds or sing the birthday song 2x, she actually song the birthday song 2x ! For WHAT ? We are second semester students,we did not need to hear her sing the stupid song ! :angryfire:bugeyes:. Anyway, you gotta love her !

Thanks for reading, this vent feels so good/

I have an A&P professor something like that. He is a very nice guy, seems very sweet and genuinely wants everyone to do well in this class and like the material...but he's just not a good teacher. He spends half the class talking about things that, while interesting, are above the scope of the class and certainly not anything we need to learn for this class. He does research work and likes to tell us about it and again, interesting, but not when we end up w/ only 15 minutes of class to go over the actual lecture material!

You know, I had an OB instructor exactly like that. Her exams were off the wall, quizzes on Blackboard were impossible, and she was just spazzy in general. Are you at my school?

Maybe ? ! She's very smart, but just waste my precious time talking about things that aren't that relevant of important. We were talking about Domestic Violence... And she asked us what does the rule of thumb mean ? Who cares !!! Stay on topic pleeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaassssssse @

Are you in Maryland at a school that begins with the letter "T"? I remember alot of questions that had nothing to do with the material at hand. Use the powerpoints and do the practice questions. :)

As someone above said ... she's basically a nice person, but not a very good teacher. Teaching is a skill. Simply "knowing your stuff" and combining that with "being nice" is not enough.

It sounds like she is so anxious to be liked that she is forgetting her role as a teacher. Perhaps you can find a way to ask questions at the beginning of the class that encourage her to get to the material at the end of the class more quickly. Let her know that you need a little help that is near the back of her handout to encourage her to get there.

Yep thats it ! Yes thats an interesting fact, but did she have to spend 10 minutes talking about it ? Oh, by the way I will never use that saying ever again, now that I know the real meaning behind it. :angryfire

Well, if it's any consolation, many of my lectures weren't in any way enlightening even when they did stay on topic. Too many of my instructors seemed to just plough through the same content as in the reading assignment... not elaborating or answering questions because "there wasn't enough time." I wasn't sure what the point of the lecture was as it didn't seem to add anything to what was presented in the text. And since everything in the text was "fair game" it's not like you could just go to lecture and skip the reading.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

I had an instructor who would do the same thing. When I couldn't take it anymore I'd ask her. "Is this going to be on the test." That would redirect her.

try it nicely.

lol- watch out- these types are tricky- she will test you on her "ramblings" :)
