I would like to be a nurse! Help Baker or Mott?

Published

Hello All

I'm 24 and I'm thinking about becoming a nurse. I'm choosing this as a career because of how bad the economy is in Michigan, especially Flint and it seems healthcare is the only secure field to go into. I don't know whether to go to Mott or Baker to get a degree in nursing. I hear there's a waitlist which scares me. If there is such a shortage of nurses, it doesn't seem to be if there is a wait list, there most be plenty of people trying to be a nurse. Right?

I would like to know what school is best to go for nursing Mott or Baker? What's the pros and cons of both? What are the duties of a nursing and what is the pay like hourly? What is the difference between a nurses aide and nursing assistant and practical nurse? What is the pay like for each?

I would like to work at McLaren Hospital, I was always treated fairly there and that always impressed me. I'm a kind, compassionate, empathetic person which I think are qualities for a nurse. I don't like throw up or blood or needles but I'll learn to deal with it. Any advice will help. Thanks again

Let me tell you, I am a current Baker student with a 4.0 and I am leaving and attending a different school. I loved my teachers and the students there but even a 4.0 doesn't assure you a slot there. As for Mott I know that they have a wait list. The only problem with Baker is that they are not very up front with the requirements to entire the nursing program. It goes by grade point, bonus points, and your score on the hesey test. Also transferring out of there is very hard. I know alot of people going to UofM Flint, it is a 4 year program but you can work after two years. Hope it helps, your going to love it!

It is 3 years for Baker if you count the Pre-reqs. If not, the actual nursing program, not the pre-nursing stuff, is 5 quarters, not even 2 years. If you gain entry into the program in this fall, you would be done March 2010.

I like the quarter system better than regular 16 week classes. Part of the reason I prefer that. And Tiff is right, there are a lot of places that take Baker credit. It is a fallacy that it isn't transferable. It doesn't transfer equally, but it transfers.

If you don't have a passion for nursing, don't do it. Save room for those who really WANT to do it.

I don't know about you, but I have experienced plenty of nurses that didn't seem to have a passion for their job, they were quite awful. I wonder how long it takes to get burned out?

I think it's really funny that the OP stated in her post that she wants to be a nurse because of Michigan's tough economy, and on another thread she is talking about how she has a "bleeding heart" and she thinks people who want to be a nurse for the money should step aside for her.

I'm in my final semester at Mott, and I highly recommend the program. It's been a great ride, and I can't believe it's almost over. 9 weeks to go!

Oh, nice. :uhoh3:

Ah, well, people like that only make me want to work harder to get into the program. :D

I attended Baker when the program first started. With a 3.6 it was still hard to get in the program. I tried twice and did not get in. I wasted more money retaking classes that I had already passed on their advice and then it counted against me. I also attended Mott for a couple of semesters and it just wasn't for me. I finally ended up at Davenport and graduated with a diploma last year and my associates this year. I went to the Midland location and would not have changed it for the world. It was a great program. The instructors were fabulous, the clinical experience was amazing and I have made many friends:heartbeat. It is competitive to get into the program but for me it wasn't too bad at least not as bad a Baker. Good luck in choosing a school it is not an easy decision.
