So, our book list for spring got sent out say, October..and we were told to buy the 8th edition of Wongs Nursing care infants/ children.

we get to class today & we are told that we need the 9th ed. and that the page numbers dont match up.

WHAT?!>!>!> are you kidding me?! i coulda kicked a baby right there...

this is disgusting. the 9th ed is like 105-128$... i cant just crap that out after i got the "old" edition.

such bs. :down::down::down::down::down::uhoh3::uhoh3::uhoh3::uhoh3:

so now im sitting here and trying to match up page numbers .... oh to top it off the class is only 8wks long. GRRRRRR

well page numbers don't matter..just look up topics in the index or table of contents. Information will be the same, just look up where it moved to

thats what i figured i would do. if the book was good enough last semester it should be just fine for this one LOL

UGH. I don't blame you, I'm so stressed at the moment I probably would have ripped out the instructor's throat right then and there!

My instructor does the same thing. We were able to download/view the syllabi for spring on the ANGEL website and one of them has tons of typos - another lists several assignments from a CD belonging to a particular book but doesn't list WHICH activity to do - and all of them have the times/dates wrong. I mean, I know she uses the syllabi from previous semesters but the least she could do is change the dates and times...and years. All syllabi say "Sp09" (Spring '09) on them - c'mon!

Anyway, sorry about what happened. If possible, you could purchase the 9th edition and sell the 8th on Amazon - you'd probably get most of your money back that way. Otherwise, the only thing you can do is match up page numbers and try not to kill your instructor. Good luck!

That's true - but sometimes, instructors don't want you to read everything on the topic. For example - our topic this week is "Reproductive Conditions" with subtopics in menopause and birth control. The chapter in our book goes from page 67-125. My instructor only wants us to read pages 78-109. That's a 27 page difference, which is a big difference to me when I have a teaching project outline due in a week, a careplan to work on, and studying to do.

Depending on how your syllabus is set up, you could probably look over the competencies and the subtopics and read just those sections. Does your instructor let you view the notes or powerpoints online? If so, that might help you figure out what to read.

well, so much for matching it all up :(

so tomorrow im going to be in the library tryin to figure this all out.

oh & i cant sell my book bc i rented it on chegg :(

Could you look at a classmates book and then compare it to yours? I used an older edition of our med calculation book and that's what I did. I took an online class and used an older edition. The chapter numbers were different so I just went by the chapter titles. I couldn't look at a classmate's book because it was an online class.

This semester, we had to buy a med-surg book for nearly $200. I wanted to use the older edition for like $40 but the teacher "didn't recommend it". Turns out, the newer edition is exactly the same as the older edition but the page numbers are off by about 10.

All I could think of after I read this is the scene in southpark "Kick the baby IKE!" " dont kick the baby" :lol2:

I feel your pain though. I took a and p 1 and 2 in the same semester, they required different editions!!!!!!! How does that even work. Same teacher and everything.

Similar situation happened for my class, but as long as the information is the same, just different page numbers, I won't be buying the newest edition. My professor just gives us the chapter topics, instead of the page numbers, so everyone we'll be reading the correct information.

You could...buy the book and then sell it immediately after the semester is over. Since the edition just came out, you should be able to get most of your money back if you don't delay in selling it right after spring semester! And by advising you to sell it, I am referring to half.com, not the bookstore, they won't give you much!

The index should be detailed enough to have the specific subtopics and their respective page numbers. You can do 1 of 3 things...

A. see what info you can get out of the old version before you buy the new version

B. suck it up and buy the new version

C. don't even buy a book to begin with. Many times teachers say to buy a book and you don't even touch it

There were TWO books that were on our list as required that we didn't use. We weren't even given lecture on topics from those books.

And....one of the books we were told any book on that topic would do...could have saved another $60. Plus the Medical dictionary...on the list but a $30+ expenditure that I could have done without..considering the internet and my phone is a good option for googling.

This semester I decided I am not going to buy any books until after the first day of class. The rule is at our bookstore that you only get a portion back after the 1st day of class anyway so I'm better off being sure that we are actually USING the books. Unfortunately I am using a "use it or loose it" type of voucher for the bookstore so I need to make sure that I get what I need, but not MORE than I need. I just want to use it wisely.
