I am in my pre-reqs and I am 36 years old. I just can't get motivated to do my work, like English..I do not like essays and so forth..what can I do to get motivated? Please no bashing..Im struggling as it is but I would love your opinions.

I read a book once that said to envision the end before working on the beginning. That really helped me in my study habits. When I don't feel like doing something, or writing that paper, I look toward what I am working for. Goals my first semester of prereqs: just prove to myself that I could actually do it. My second semester: keep that high GPA and even make the dean's list and get into that honor society ( I did!!) My third semester: keep up that high GPA so I could get into the nursing program. Those small goals and envisioning myself reaching them helped me gather the motivation to get it done.
If that doesn't work, reward yourself :) Say, if you finish that paper, you get one free day to play!
Best of luck to you!!
Also...I am 35...that is just a number! :)

I always told my self I couldn't write English papers. What really motivated me was...... I printed out a nursing application and put it at the back of my binder and every time I wanted to give up, I would flip to the back and look at that nursing app.....If I didn't pass this class I wouldn't be able to turn in my application. I took my English 1 online, I would brainstorm and write a little bit everyday, and at the end of the week I would peice it all together and have a paper. Don't try and write a paper in one day. Good luck.
Thanks trb76 and mzrainydayz those both sound like great ideas..I want this more than anything..I just can't focus on it. I guess because I get bored easily or something because if it's not interesting I don't pay much attention to it (bad I know). But I'm gonna try my best to get through it.

I always do an outline first. That helps a lot. Most of the time the ideas start flowing and before you know it you'll have your paper. Then you can reward yourself! Oh and I'm 40. If I can do it, so can you.

If at all possible, try to choose essay topics that may have relevance to health care or nursing - even if it's something like ethics or philosophy. This will make it much more engaging and you can re-cycle these later on when you have to do papers for nursing courses.

I know this probably isn't the greatest way to motivate yourself.. But it helps if I think about money lol....how much more money I will be making in the future, as opposed to how much less I will be making if I don't graduate.
True..I just hate the pre-reqs..they are so boring..I want to be in the nursing part..but I gotta do good to get there. I haven't got into anatomy yet..that will catch my interest for sure!

I can totally relate to you, Tricia76. My biggest problem is motivation, and that's in everything in my life not just school (unfortunately). I know this probably isnt the best or healthiest idea, but I find that its easier for me to focus and become more motivated when I have some caffeine (tea, coffee, etc.). It gives my mind the initial "jump start" to get moving. Yes, I know caffeine is not the healthiest advice out there, but its just my personal savior to get me through school for now. Also, whenever I have to do any sort of writing or essay, I listen to either classical or instrumental music. Any kind of music that does not have vocals in it really helps me to focus on my schoolwork. I know that may sound counter productive, but for me I need music to help me write. Just some things that help me :)
Those are some good ideas Jfbeck440. I think I will try the music thing and you are right, caffeine is not good for you but I will do it to get through this. I use to drink pop with caffeine all the time and now I don't so I think I will shoot through the roof if I start again lol I just want to show my kids I can do this..not only show them but myself as well.
